Making a Major Decision

My last blogs have been about submission and marriage. Does that mean my husband does whatever he likes and I’m expected to go along with it? No, it does not. He would never make a decision without consulting me and talking it over. Similarly I would not make a major decision without his input. Before he retired, my darling was under considerable stress at work with expectations beyond what any human being could reasonably do. It looked likely to get worse. He suffered many migraines, severe neck and shoulder pains and other health issues caused by stress. I was very … Continue reading

Choosing Flowers with the Color Wheel

Whether you are planning a window box or a garden, knowing which colors of flowers go together and what their impact will be is an important planning step. You don’t want your flowers to clash, overpower or get washed out. And different colors can convey different moods and looks. Using the color wheel, as well as your own common sense can help you create a beautiful display. Before we get into the color wheel, let’s talk about the color white. White isn’t on the color wheel, since it is a neutral color and will compliment any others. You can use … Continue reading

Not Reading Labels Cost Me Money

We try to provide a healthy but frugal diet for our family. I am constantly reading coupon websites, grocery store flyers and unit pricing signs to make sure that we get the most food for our money. We stay away (mostly) from expensive junk foods, such as soda, candy, sugary cereal and packaged convenience foods that are loaded with chemicals. But, I recently found that I haven’t been doing enough label reading, and that fact has cost me some money. How? Here is my story. Let’s start with some salad dressing. We try to make salads several times a week … Continue reading

Is it Just Me?

Take a moment to look through some of the magazines in your home, or if you don’t have any, pick up a copy of one of the prominent ones sometime. Do you feel like it was written with someone like you in mind? While many magazines do a great job of covering topics that a number of women can relate to (budget, diet, exercise, clothes, hair, make up, medicine, cooking/recipes, cleaning, decorating, raising kids, careers, cars, and more) there are times when I question what “everyday” or “average” really means. I recently looked through some lists of what were supposed … Continue reading

Friend or parent – part 2

On Saturday when my daughter rang,as we were talking,I mentioned Kori’s blog , and the idea that you could not be best friend and parent to your child. ‘It needs to be a balance between the two,’ my daughter said, which I agree with. One of our favorite shows is ‘Gilmore Girls.’ I have bought and finished watching season 7 which has only just been released in Australia. It’s also one of my daughter’s favorites and for the same reason. We both loved the close relationship between Lorelei and Rory. Even so, there were some times I felt like getting … Continue reading

Remembering Titanic: What Would You Have Done?

Back in November when Wayne and I went to visit our families for Thanksgiving, we had the opportunity to see “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Being a fan of the 1997 movie, I was very psyched to see this exhibit. I’d heard nothing but raves about it from others who’d seen it when it’d been in Florida. It proved as amazing as everyone said. From the recreated passenger cabins (both first class and third) to the grand staircase to the many artifacts recovered from the bottom of the North Atlantic I couldn’t help … Continue reading

Balancing Decisions and Choices (Yours and Theirs)

I tend to write fairly often about decisions and choices—the importance of letting our children learn how to make decisions and take chances on their own instead of our doing everything for them as parents. I realize, however, that there has to be some balance between our making decisions and choices as parents, and our child’s making decisions and choices too… In my experience as a parent—and most of that time as a single parent—I have learned that when I start to feel resentment and completely overwhelmed, then things are likely out of balance. While I want my kids to … Continue reading

When You Change Your Mind about Parenting Choices

Parenting choices are not written in stone—even if we do know that we need to be consistent and set firm boundaries, there are still those times when we change our minds. Experience teaches us a thing or two or we discover that what worked with one child does not necessarily work with another so we need to adjust. There is no shame and should not be any guilt, but it can be tough figuring out just how to go about changing our mind without losing face… If truth be told, in my two decades of parenting, I have changed my … Continue reading

Another Reason I’m Married Without Children

A while back I wrote about some of the reasons why I’ve chosen not to have children. (See: “When Are You Going to Have Kids?” and “When Are You Going to have Kids?” – Part II.) In addition to the trip down memory lane I took when I went back to Denver recently that reminded me of all the times I’ve fallen in love with Wayne again and again, I also got a chance to really examine my roots. The who I am and who I’ve become because of where I’ve been. I realized in addition to influencing many other … Continue reading

We Have a Choice in How We Interpret Things

I wrote earlier today about how our bodies can sometimes have minds of their own (so to speak) and that even if we are trying to stay focused on work, we can have physical reactions and responses to stresses and realities in the work place. As home business owners, we really do have a great deal of control over our work life, but we might forget that we also get to choose how we interpret the things that happen (what people say and do, for example) in the every day workings of our businesses. I am not talking about burying … Continue reading
