More Bad News for Jessica Simpson and Don Imus

Jessica Simpson proves once again that you don’t need to memorize the words to a song to be a singer. As long as you look good in Daisy Dukes, and can use cheat sheets in the recording studio, you can call yourself a recording star. For the seventh time this year, Simpson was left red-faced and teary-eyed at a concert when she forgot the lyrics to two of her songs. She wasn’t drunk, fatigued or under duress; instead the blonde crossover says she simply blanked during a concert in California on Saturday. The gig was her final performance as the … Continue reading

Imus Puts Foot in Mouth Again

They say actions speak louder than words, but in Don Imus’ case the things that come out of his mouth often get more attention. So here we go again… Months after being allowed to return to the airwaves after getting booted for making racial comments about members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, Imus’ foot is back in his mouth again. And yet again the radio host is left to defend his off-the-cuff remarks. Yesterday Imus was discussing the arrests of suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones with sports announcer Warner Wolf. At one point in the conversation Imus … Continue reading

Don Imus Returns to Radio

For those of you who don’t know, Don Imus is back on the radio. His return comes eight months after his racially charged on-air remark about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team (he called them “nappy-headed hos”) got him fired from CBS Radio and MSNBC. Critics lambasted him; he apologized, laid low for a few months and then lo and behold was hired by Citadel Broadcasting and is now right back where he started. Only now he’s got a few new friends—young black cast members. Do you see where I’m going with this? Imus returned to the airwaves with a … Continue reading

Imus Returns

Has it been seven months already? That’s how long shock jock Don Imus has been off the air. Did you miss him? If so, start counting down the days–on December 3rd Imus will return to the airwaves and his well-paid hiatus will be over. I should say well paid and self-inflicted hiatus will be over. You’ll recall CBS Radio silenced Imus’ broadcasting career last April after he uttered a racist and sexist remark about the Rutgers University women’s basketball team. The incident sparked a national furor and numerous civil rights leaders and broadcast journalists called for Imus’ resignation. Imus fans … Continue reading

All Is Not Well In Tinseltown

At least for some stars… TV legend Merv Griffin has been hospitalized for a recurrence of prostate cancer. According to his rep, Griffin is being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for cancer discovered during a routine examination a few weeks ago. In a statement released earlier today the 82-year-old game show producer said: “I’d rather play Jeopardy! than live it. I was ready for a vacation; however, this wasn’t the destination I had in mind.” It’s nice to see Griffin’s sense of humor remains intact. Meanwhile, singer Jon Bon Jovi is lashing out at the owners of an energy drink. … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates—More Imus Fallout, Scotty Blasts Off, and More

MORE IMUS FALLOUT If you thought that the furor that erupted over Don Imus’ demeaning remarks used to describe the Rutgers University’s women’s basketball team is over—-think again. Yesterday, more than 400 people attended a discussion titled “Does Hip-Hop Hate Women?” at the University of Chicago. (Imus had attempted to keep his radio-job earlier this month by claiming that rappers routinely “defame and demean black women” and call them “worse names than I ever did.”) Of those who participated in the discussion, some criticized music executives (who met earlier this month in New York) for failing to use their collective … Continue reading

America and Racism

The other day, I woke up at 5 am to get my husband ready for work. There isn’t much on that early in the morning – mostly paid television programming. But I did manage to find the movie Glory on one channel. If you haven’t seen it, you really should. It is a magnificent movie that invokes many emotions, but don’t expect to walk away from it with the warm fuzzies. It is about the first black Union regiment that fought in the Civil War. Sometimes it is hard to see how this regiment was treated, but to see their … Continue reading

Furor Over Imus

In a few hours I will be tuning into “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to watch the Rutgers’ women’s basketball team and their coach respond to remarks made about the players by radio host Don Imus. For those of you out of the loop Imus sparked a firestorm of controversy when he made a racially motivated disparaging remark about the mostly black Rutgers team on his nationally syndicated radio show last week. In the days since cable network MSNBC pulled the plug on his talk show’s television simulcast and various big name sponsors, including American Express, Staples, Procter & Gamble, and … Continue reading
