Easter Hats, Easter Eggs and Bunnies

One of the things I used to hate about Easter when the children were at school was the Easter hat parades. Being a non crafty person the mere mention of hat parade or fancy dress was enough to send me into despair. Easter eggs always took a secondary role in Easter celebrations. Easter Eggs or bunnies never appear till Easter Sunday morning. Having two children who were allergic to chocolate when young always put a damper on it. Maybe that’s one of the reasons we never went overboard about Easter eggs. Yes, I tried carob and candy eggs but it’s … Continue reading

Alternatives to Plastic Easter Eggs – Part 2

Yesterday, I talked about alternatives for plastic Easter eggs. Like many other things that can be bad for the environment, we have gotten used to the convenience of plastic eggs, but there are great (and fun to make!) alternatives. PETA lists a recipe on their web page for making Clay Easter eggs. All that is needed for this recipe is cornstarch, water, and baking soda. Combine one cup of cornstarch, 1 1/4 cups of cold water, and 2 cups of baking soda and stir in a saucepan over medium heat for 4 minutes. Once the mixture looks like mashed potatoes, … Continue reading

Why Celebrate Easter?

Most everyone loves having a few days off at Easter and they love Easter eggs. Many of us will probably eat way too much chocolate. But how many people stop and think about why we celebrate Easter? Do they even know? Have you ever talked to your friends about why we celebrate Easter? The world wants to depict Easter with Easter bunnies and eggs and while that can be fun, there is a deeper significance to Easter that many people are not aware of. One idea I liked of getting the message out there came, from a teenage girl at … Continue reading

‘Just in Case’ at Easter ?

Easter is a time for gifts of Easter eggs and chocolates. It is also the time to remember the greatest gift that was given – the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for your sins and mine. In a recent episode of Eli Stone when he was struggling with his gift of visions and querying why it had been given to him when sometimes it caused him nothing but trouble. he was told, ‘A gift is something that is given. You don’t own it. The world does.’ That’s basically the message of Easter. The gift Jesus gave at that first … Continue reading

DVD Easter Eggs

Do you know about all of the hidden features on your DVDs? This website will show you where the best little treasures are to be found. You may not be familiar with the term Easter Egg. It is generally used to indicate something that a programmer intentionally hid within a program. The probable first Easter Egg ever was in an Atari 2600 video game called Adventure. What is Easter Really?

It might shock some to learn that Easter is not actually a Christian holiday. Easter has very clear pagan roots that predate Christ in the flesh. The name “Easter” derives from the pagan queen of heaven Ishtar or Astarte, as well as various other names depending on the region celebrating. During some Easter celebrations, men and women would assemble in a circle around a fire each placing a piece of oatcake in a shepherd’s bonnet. One of the pieces would be blackened. Each person was blindfolded and chose a piece of oatcake out of the bonnet. Whoever chose the blackened … Continue reading

More Cool Ways to Decorate Eggs

Don’t just make plain old eggs, when you can make really cool ones! Try some of these ideas. *Start by boiling eggs as usual. When cool, place them on newspaper or paper towels to protect work surfaces. Eggs with Swirls, Swishes, and Shapes Light a candle and drip some wax onto the eggs swirling and swishing to make different designs and shapes. When the wax cools it will harden. Once it’s hard, dip the eggs into color or paint as desired. The color won’t penetrate the wax. When eggs are dry, remove wax to reveal designs. *An adult will need … Continue reading
