This Week in History – May 24, 1963

Well, I was still hanging out in my maternal pad (i.e. I would not be born for another three weeks), but things were still happening in the world this week in 1963: In national news, President John F. Kennedy celebrated his 46th (and sadly his last) birthday. What presents did he get? He received a Civil War carbine repeater rifle and a keg of 46-year-old brandy. The Vatican finally disclosed that Pope John XXIII had been fighting stomach cancer for a year. He would pass away from the disease on June 3, 1963 at the age of 81. In sporting … Continue reading

Emmy Thoughts: “What Was Up With That Stage?”

I can picture it now… a few months ago a summer intern working with Emmy show producers comes into work following an evening taking in Shakespeare’s Othello at a knock-off Globe Theatre in Burbank. He walks into a morning meeting where his bosses are kicking around ways to infuse “new life” into the 50-year plus telecast. “I have it,” the intern exclaims. “Build a theater-in-the-round stage in the Shrine Auditorium where ensemble casts are forced to sit together rather than scattered about.” “Hmmm…” the producers ponder before coming to the conclusion: “It’s so crazy it might just work.” Yeah, well, … Continue reading

Emmy Mania—Will You Be Watching?

In just a few hours hundreds of Hollywood’s elite will be strutting down the red carpet hoping they will end their evening clutching television’s highest honor—-the Emmy Award. Only this year, the red carpet is being tinged with a hint of “green.” As in eco-green. Yes, the entertainment industry is contributing to the global cause by launching a “Green with Emmy” campaign. (Clever.) Not only will the show’s Shrine Auditorium location be powered by renewable energy for the month of September (a combination of solar energy, wind energy and hydropower), but stars will also be gathering under a solar panel … Continue reading

Joan Rivers Gets The Boot From The Red Carpet—AGAIN!

Well, at least she won’t have to worry about finding the right dress… It’s half-true. The irreverent Joan Rivers will NOT be yukking it up on the red carpet tomorrow night preceding the Emmy Awards. Rivers and her daughter Melissa have been staples on the red carpet for years, but alas, it seems their reign has finally come to an end. According to the New York Post, after the TV Guide Channel dropped the comedienne and her daughter, Rivers desperately tried to get chummy with former employer E! in hopes of making a comeback there. The official word from E! … Continue reading

Getting Ready For Emmy

It’s that time of year again. Time to pull out the pizza and pickles. It’s Emmy time! The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards airs live tomorrow night on FOX. But for the lucky actors and actresses vying for telvision’s highest honor the party has already started. For the past few days nominees have been making the rounds at pre-Emmy bashes, most notably last night’s gala hosted by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Nominees including Denis Leary, Sandra Oh, T.R. Knight, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jon Cryer. All showed up for the festivities and were remarkably honest about what … Continue reading
