Shaking Things Up at the Emmys and Taking Flight in Tennessee

SHAKING THINGS UP AT THE EMMYS Dare I say I am looking forward to this year’s Emmy Awards? Usually, I tune into to see who’s wearing what, and go about my chores while the show’s host and winners drone on in the background. This year, though, I think I might actually sit down and watch some of the festivities. Why the change of heart? I’m thinking this year might not be as boring as years past since there won’t be a single Emmy host this time around–there will be five. Tom Bergeron, of “Dancing With the Stars”; Ryan Seacrest, of … Continue reading

Ellen to Use New Emmy as Wedding Cake Topper

She was joking… about the cake topper… not about the wedding. Ellen DeGeneres has another reason to celebrate today. In addition to being “over the moon” about her upcoming nuptials to partner Portia de Rossi, the actress walked away with her fourth trophy as outstanding talk-show host, at last night’s 35th annual Daytime Emmy Awards. And according to DeGeneres, don’t look for her to pull an Oprah and take herself of contention for future statuettes. “I’m not going to take my name out,” DeGeneres deadpanned with reporters backstage. “Oprah has made so many bad choices. Look at her career.” While … Continue reading

Emmy Thoughts: “What Was Up With That Stage?”

I can picture it now… a few months ago a summer intern working with Emmy show producers comes into work following an evening taking in Shakespeare’s Othello at a knock-off Globe Theatre in Burbank. He walks into a morning meeting where his bosses are kicking around ways to infuse “new life” into the 50-year plus telecast. “I have it,” the intern exclaims. “Build a theater-in-the-round stage in the Shrine Auditorium where ensemble casts are forced to sit together rather than scattered about.” “Hmmm…” the producers ponder before coming to the conclusion: “It’s so crazy it might just work.” Yeah, well, … Continue reading

Censors Get A Workout At The Emmys

Honestly, I thought there was something wrong with my TV. When the sound cut out in the middle of Ray Romano’s rant on what life has been like since his show went off the air, I instantly grabbed my TV remote and starting pressing the volume button. The volume numbers increased, but still no sound. It took me a good minute to figure out that the comedian had been censored. Whoever was in charge of pressing the bleep button at last night’s Emmy Awards sure got a workout. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he or she is nursing … Continue reading

My Emmy Night Memories

It’s hailed as “TV’s Biggest Night.” The 58th Primetime Emmy Awards air tonight on NBC and I can’t wait. While it sounds like I will sitting front and center on my couch anxiously awaiting the acceptance speeches of my favorite primetime stars, the reality is that with a toddler to feed, bathe and put to bed (and subsequently a kitchen and bathroom to clean) I will be lucky if I get to see the closing credits. But, it wasn’t always this way. When I was growing up Emmy night was a hallowed tradition. My friend from two doors down would … Continue reading

Emmy, Her Bags and the Internet Revenue Service

I don’t know about you, but I am always a little envious when I hear of all the fabulous goodies inside an award show’s gift bag. Stuff that you and I can often only dream about is given to celebs who present at the shows. The goodie bags for this year’s presenters at the Emmy Awards (held August 27th) contain items that total between $27,000 and $33,000. But now, the IRS is wanting some of it. Celebrities were reminded by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in a letter that the IRS sees the goodies inside the bag as … Continue reading
