Be Encouraged

I admit to having a soft spot for Jacob in the Bible. Yes, he was a liar and a cheat. But he was also a man who knew what was important. Jacob saw the value of the birthright when Esau didn’t, Genesis 25:31-34. Although the methods he and his mother, Rebekah, employed to gain his father’s blessing were underhanded and deceitful, Genesis 27:1-29, they both paid the penalty for that. Jacob had to leave home because of his brother’s anger, Genesis 27:42-45. Though they both thought it would be only for a short time, Jacob never saw his mother again. … Continue reading

A Six Year Old’s Wisdom

At school my husband and I taught a lesson about God’s command not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Genesis 2:9 The children heard how Adam and Eve disobeyed God and because of that, friendship with God was broken, Genesis 3:1-24. The children learned that God always had a plan to rectify the situation We thought the lesson had gone pretty well, even though I saw some of the children struggling to understand how God could send His Son to make things right again by dying on the cross. In our … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share with Your Children: Joseph’s Life

This is my final entry (of a total of six) over the life of Joseph. Joseph is the key figure in the final portion of the book of Genesis, and the Bible explains a lot about many details of his life. I have chosen to split Joseph’s life story into several blog entries because there is so much detail about Joseph’s life. Each portion of Joseph’s life is exciting and intriguing, and thus can hold the attention of children well. I think it is a good idea to share each portion of Joseph’s story separately with your children, but then … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share with Your Children: Families Reunited

In the last segment I wrote about Joseph’s life, Joseph was put in a place of prominence by Pharaoh in Egypt. Joseph found favor with Pharaoh because Joseph (through the Lord) interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams which had greatly troubled Pharaoh. Beginning in Genesis 41:47, the Bible speaks of the seven years of abundance within the land of Egypt in which Joseph directed the storage of grain. Then, beginning in Genesis 41:53, the Bible speaks of the seven years of famine which afflicted the land. People from all lands came to Joseph to buy grain which Joseph had stored during the seven … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share with Your Children: Jacob and Esau

Jacob and Esau were the twin sons of Isaac (the son of Abraham) and Rebekah. The story of Jacob and Esau is found throughout several chapters in Genesis; however, the portion of their story which this entry will focus on is found in Genesis 25:21 through 27:46. This section of scripture details a couple of interactions between the brothers Jacob and Esau. Key Lessons Consider priorities in life. Esau sold his birthright for stew in Genesis 25:29-34. Although Esau was hungry and exhausted he should have considered what he was trading away to satisfy a temporary state of hunger. Children … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share with Your Children: Abraham’s Sacrifice

One of the most difficult times in the life of Abraham is found in Genesis 22:1-19. Here the Lord asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only son through Sarah: the son in whom the promise of Genesis 12:2-3 was to come. This account from Abraham’s life shows an amazing faith in the Lord which should be an example to all. Key Lessons Abraham had his priorities in the right place. Although Abraham’s family was very important to him, the Lord was the focus and first priority in his life. It is vital that the Lord is first in our lives. … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share with Your Children: The Births of Ishmael and Isaac

This blog is a continuation in the story of Abraham’s (Abram’s) life. The stories of the births of Isaac and Ishmael can be found in Genesis 16:1 through 17:27 and Genesis 21:1 through 21:8. There are many lessons to be learned from the births of these two sons of Abraham. Key Lessons God can do what man deems impossible. Abraham and Sarah thought it was impossible for Sarah to have children. However, Isaac was born to Abraham when he was one hundred years old. In fact in Genesis 18:11 the Bible says that, “The way of women had ceased to … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share With Your Children: Abram

I have been a little behind in my weekly blog, “Bible Stories to Share with Your Children,” but I am getting back on track with this entry over Abram. Abram’s (and later Abraham’s) story is quite extensive and detailed so I am going to break his life into a few different blogs that focus on unique events in Abraham’s life. The complete story of Abraham is told in the Bible from Genesis 11:26 to 25:11; however, the focus of this blog is found in Genesis 11:26 to 13:18. Key Lessons Abram went. In Genesis 12:1-3 the Bible says, “Now the … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share with Your Children: Adam and Eve

The story of Adam and Eve, their temptation and the fall of man, is found in the Bible from Genesis 2:15 through Gensis 3:24. The story of Adam and Eve continues on past the end of the third chapter of Genesis; however, I want to focus on the first part of their story. The account of Adam and Eve can easily be taught on different levels depending on the age of your children. Key Lessons 1. God gave a commandment which Adam and Eve were required to follow. There are commandments which must be followed today. Ephesians 6:1 states: “Children, … Continue reading

Bible Stories to Share With Your Children: The Creation

As I mentioned in a previous blog, I am going to start writing a weekly series on Bible stories to share with your children. I believe that the Biblical account of creation is a great place to start for a couple of different reasons, most obviously because it shows children the beginning of our existence, but also because it shows that we are unique creation from God. The Biblical account of creation is found in the first two chapters of Genesis. My goal in this blog is not to retell the creation story but to rather give ideas on how … Continue reading
