Homeschool Parents in Germany Still Fighting Nazi Laws

“The ‘Schulpflicht’ – the laws that require school attendance – are on the books in the German states, and have been traced back to the ‘Reichsschulpflicht Gesetz’ [federal compulsory attendance laws] which was passed in 1938. Except for the removal of references to the Nazi party, these laws are identical or substantially the same as the laws passed by Hitler’s government, criminalizing parents who keep their children home for school.” This is what the parents Juergen and Rosemarie Dudeck of Archfeld Germany have alleged in court in their fight to homeschool their children. To date they have been wholly unsuccessful … Continue reading

A Holocaust Hero Passes Away

The other day, I was blogging about the movie The Pianist and how at the end, a Nazi officer actually helped Jewish pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman right before the war ends. There were many Holocaust heroes during that time – people who risked their own lives to save others. One of them, Irena Sendler, has just passed away recently at the age of 98. Irena was a Polish social worker during World War II. Irena began offering Jewish families food and shelter in 1939. Soon, her job as a social worker would allow her to help more Jews. Saying she was … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Easy Check-In and Another Reason to Visit Germany

American Airlines is making it even easier for passengers to check in for flights… provided you have a Web-enabled cellphone and know how to use all of its features. The airlines’ newest service won’t help cellphone-free travelers like my mom, but if you are a frequent flyer who never leaves home without your personal electronic device then I would highly recommend using American’s recently upgraded mobile website. The expanded service allows customers to check in for flights and look at itineraries on their Web-enabled cellphones. Waht’s more, in a few weeks the airline’s new service will allow travelers to book … Continue reading

I Am Not Wolf – Roger Terry

“I Am Not Wolf” by LDS author Roger Terry is a book that is equally at home on the shelf of an LDS reader or a person who prefers nationally published books. Written in a literary style we don’t often see on the LDS market, I was instantly caught up in the beautiful and rich imagery and found myself more than just a little bit jealous of Terry’s skills as a writer. David Nelson has taken some time off from college and decides to come to Germany for a vacation. His mother was German and so he speaks the language … Continue reading

Farrah Fawcett Takes Cancer Battle To Germany

Farrah Fawcett’s cancer may have returned, but she says don’t count her out yet. The former “Charlie’s Angels” star is not only traveling abroad to secure reinforcements in her battle against the deadly disease, she’s also videotaping the experience for a possible documentary. Fawcett is currently in Germany receiving “alternative treatments” for her cancer. And according to Craig Nevius, the producer of Fawcett’s reality show “Chasing Farrah,” the 60-year-old actress has been responding well to the new treatment. Nevius declined to reveal the type of treatment Fawcett is receiving, but did say that the regime is not one that is … Continue reading
