Carving a Friendly Pumpkin

Last night we carved our big pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern, or should I say bat-o-lantern, since the pattern we chose was a bat. This was the first time that we have actually carved a pumpkin in five years. Previously, our kids were too young to appreciate the activity. Well, one is still too young, but he went to sleep early, anyway. Although we have no problem with Halloween, we do concentrate on the friendly and not scary aspects of the celebration. After all, it does have some Christian influences, believe it or not. The Christians, wanting to convert pagans and … Continue reading

Some Simple Halloween Decorating Ideas

If you’re looking for some simple ways to add a few more Halloween touches, here you go: Boo! Scrap wood is great for this decoration, because it will give it a more rustic look. If you don’t have any, craft wood will work too. Look for pre-cut wood for small signs, which often have a wire for hanging already attached. Paint the wood orange and let it dry. Then, paint the word “boo!” with black paint. Apply the paint in thick coats so you get a few drips. Free hand the letters (they look better if not perfect). Add a … Continue reading

Halloween or Harvest Décor Tips

Pumpkins are a big hit this time of year and people have come up with some really creative ways to use them. Probably the biggest concern, especially if the weather is still warm in your area, is how to make pumpkins last longer. The truth is you might have to replace them between now and Halloween although keeping them whole will make them last longer. By not carving your pumpkins just yet, you won’t have to worry about them decaying so soon. It’s also a good idea to place them where they get at least some shade during the day. … Continue reading

What Fall Means to Your Pet: The Good, the Bad, and the Sniffly

Just like many of us humans, animals rejoice in fall’s coming too. The milder weather lends to more outdoor time, which is good, but it can also be not so good. The Good: Outdoor Time My Murph likes fall because it means more time sitting on the back deck, longer walks, and more frequent trips to the park. It’s easy to both sneak in more exercise and relaxation at this time of year. The cooler weather also often revives Murph, making him a bit more perky and frisky. He’s more inclined to play tugga-tugga with his shaky ball in the … Continue reading

Harvest Time

I’m not talking about the season of harvest that comes each year. I’m talking about a harvest that is year round. It’s a harvest of souls in need of the Savior. Unfortunately, this harvest is in grave need of workers! “But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.’” (Matthew 9:37-38) As I look around … Continue reading

Help you kids make a cool trick or treat safety checklist chart. They can read over the safety tips or you can read them aloud for children too young to read as you work on this project.
