$5 Million Dollars Raised for Australian Bushfire Victims

The rain poured down in Melbourne, Australia, but it didn’t deter the crowds from attending the concert to raise money for the bushfires that have recently devastated the state of Victoria in south-eastern Australia. While over 200 people died in the bushfires, over 80, 000 people attended the concert in Melbourne, with a sister concert also celebrated in Sydney this weekend. While the news is generally full of unpleasant natural events and the even less pleasant acts of man, today’s headlines focus more on the good will of mankind where people come together to support other in financial and psychological … Continue reading

Not many people will give up their vacation time to help others. Helping needy people is not every couple’s idea of the ideal way to spend three weeks. Build-A-Bear Workshop and Saturday

This morning when I got out of bed I was surprised to find my fourth grade twins already dressed, and with shoes on their feet. They’d read on the internet that Build-A-Bear Workshop was holding a charity bear stuffing, where the first 150 guests could stuff an animal for free, and donate the animal to different charities. Since the Build-A-Bear store is a mall across town that we rarely go to, and the fact that the charity animals were limited to the first 150, I grumbled, got dressed and grabbed a cup of coffee for the road. I expected a … Continue reading

From Idea to Reality

Australia has been for some time and is still in the grip of a severe drought that has made life difficult for farmers and those on the land. But fellow Aussies on the South Coast have been doing there bit to help out those suffering the effects of drought. In early December, when my husband and I stopped off at Kiama on the way to Sydney, a benefit concert was setting up for later that day to raise money for those struggling at present. This week our local paper ran the story of a woman from the Bega area who … Continue reading

10 Tips For Giving Advice

After Job’s friends have had their say and Job has replied, Elihu decides get into the advice business. He can keep quiet no longer, it seems. His anger is bubbling up with in him and it needs an outlet. He is angry with Job because he still maintains his innocence and he is angry with Job’s three friends because ‘they had come up with no answers, and yet had condemned job,’ Job 32:3. Elihu’s speech was born out of anger, which is never a good starting point for giving advice. The other problem is that even though younger than Job … Continue reading

Small Acts of Service

Every day we are given small opportunities to serve those around us. This type of small service can make a big difference in someone’s day. It can also help you to feel closer to the Lord as you help His children. It is important that we look for these opportunities and take advantage of them. I have witnessed several small acts of service over the past few days. My husband just helped our neighbors load their moving truck. He went over and volunteered to help, when he realized that they did not have anyone to help them. We have spoken … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- Visit Someone in the Hospital

Its’ a sure-fire cure for whatever ails you. Spend some time with someone who needs you. Go visit a hospital, or a nursing home. It doesn’t matter if you know someone in the hospital or not. Call your friends, or your clergy, ask them if they know someone you could visit or help. If that fails, just pick up and go. If you feel a little awkward, take a small gift with you: some daisies, a balloon, or a stuffed animal your kids don’t use anymore. Even better, take a friend. When you get to where you’re going, stop at … Continue reading

Having Fun While Helping Others

Wouldn’t it be cool to help other people while having fun too? There are lots of things you can do to help others, get some exercise, and have fun, all at the same time. One idea is raking leaves for an elderly or disabled neighbor. Okay, that may not seem like a great way to spend a Saturday, and it probably doesn’t sound like a lot of fun, but wait. If you take a friend or a sibling along and make it into a contest, it can be fun. You can work on one side of the yard while your … Continue reading

Lose Weight for Just Pennies a Day

I remember when I was growing up, there were always ads on television about the Children’s Fund and other charity organizations that urged individuals to sign up for their programs and bring food and water to children for just pennies a day. For the cost of a cup of coffee, you could bring food and water daily to children in countries in other parts of the world. The following suggestion, has likely been tried somewhere, though I’ve not seen it yet. My suggestion is to lose weight by not focusing on feeding yourself less, but by focusing on feeding others … Continue reading

Teaching Your Children to Serve Others

This year my stake has been really focused on families going out to volunteer in the community. This is a great way to get to know other members of the community. It is also a wonderful opportunity to teach our children about the importance of serving others. This can be difficult to teach our children. It is important that they begin to think outside of themselves at an early age. There are some simple ways to help your children learn to serve others. 1) The easiest way is by example. As your children see you reaching out to others and … Continue reading
