It Pays to be Michelle Obama’s Hairstylist

Straightening hair sure has its privileges… especially if the locks you are working on belong to the nation’s newest first lady. Michelle Obama has guaranteed her hairstylist a place in history, in addition to helping him land a development deal to star in a new reality show. Johnny Wright… remember the name. It’s one you’ll be hearing a lot of in the near future. The former Chicago-based hairstylist, who worked on the first lady’s coif for the Democratic National Convention, her upcoming appearance on the cover of Vogue magazine and other occasions, has reportedly signed a deal with 44 Blue, … Continue reading

Hair Raising Dilemma: Who Calls the Shots in Your Family?

I didn’t have to take a brush to my daughter’s hair until she was nearly 2 years old. She simply didn’t have enough to warrant doing so. (This is how her hair looked until she was about 19 months. Sort of.) Currently, her locks don’t grace her shoulders or flow to the middle of her back like her best friend’s, but she couldn’t care less. Given her genetic make up she likely won’t have luxuriously, thick, sleek locks that blow seductively when windswept like overpaid supermodels. Rather, she will have to make do with thin, wispy hair that struggles to … Continue reading

“No Pooing” Method

Now I know what you might be thinking, but don’t go there. Read this post instead to find out one of the latest trends to saving money and the environment. Lately, the “no pooing” method has been hitting me left and right. I’ve been getting e-mails and phone calls about this phenomena, and a few of my friends are going to try it. I have to admit that when I first saw the name of the method, “no pooing,” I thought to myself that this must be going somewhere in the frugal hall of fame for extreme frugality. How does … Continue reading

Post-Sun Remedies for Skin and Hair

A day in the sun doesn’t have to end in sunburn… but sometimes it does. Even if you don’t come home as red as a lobster, you may still feel sticky, grimy, hot, and tired. Some of these post-sun remedies can help refresh your skin and hair after a day at the beach, pool, or park. Aloe vera — my favorite post-sun remedy. It feels cool going on and relieves some of the heat. Aloe has a long history of being a healing plant — you’ll find lots of products that contain aloe on the shelves these days. Personally, I … Continue reading

Correcting a Hair Dye Boo-Boo

Yesterday, the hair coloring bug bit me and I picked up a highlighting kit. The streaks are kind of cute, but I’m not totally in love with them. So that got me thinking of ways to fix things if I’d had a hair disaster! If your color isn’t as light as you’d hoped, you can try the old fashioned hair lightener: lemon juice! Rinse your hair with a little lemon juice and sit in the sun — your hair will gradually get lighter. If your color isn’t as dark as you’d hoped, you can always re-dye it with another, darker … Continue reading

Highlights at Home

It’s been a long time since I got the urge to dye my hair. Partially because it’s expensive and partially because I just haven’t felt the need. But today the bug hit hard and I gave in. I picked up a highlighting kit that was made “especially for curly hair”. I guess that’s because the highlighting comb that comes with the kit has extra-wide teeth? This is the first time I’ve attempted highlights, rather than an all-over color, so I’m not really sure what the little comb usually looks like. The color? Supposedly a warm coppery color, somewhere between my … Continue reading

Your Hair Knows Where You’ve Been

It sounds like something from CSI or Law and Order: using a person’s hair to figure out where they’ve been. Researchers from the University of Utah have been analyzing water molecules from human hair samples — and using the information to determine where the person lived. The process isn’t always accurate, but it’s pretty close. Analyzing the makeup of water molecules determines the right region of origin around eighty-five percent of the time. This project was inspired by the 2001 anthrax attacks. Researchers wondered if microbes (like anthrax) might record the water environment that they came from. After that idea, … Continue reading

Make Your Own Frugal Hot Oil Treatment

If you are old enough to remember the 80s, then you also remember the era of big, fluffy hair. I, unfortunately, was born with very straight, fine hair. This is something that can be an asset now, but it certainly wasn’t back then. Since that was the case, I have to admit, I had my hair permed once or twice in an effort to give it that classic 80s hairdo. Yeah, yeah, I know, that was so awful back then, wasn’t it? As a result of the perming, my nice soft hair dried out, so it needed some deep conditioning. … Continue reading

Family and Sibling Haircuts—Different or Similar?

Individuality is important in a family, but so is efficiency and connectedness. One of the areas that parents of more than one child wrestle with is hair cuts—do we get similar hair cuts for our kids, even identical ones when they are little, or do we shake things up and let individuality emerge from an early age? It can be so tempting to go with a more uniform family look—especially if you have children of all the same gender or those of similar ages. How simple and efficient it is to line all the boys up and give them the … Continue reading

Stunning in Silver

Be proud of your grey hair, ladies! A recent survey from the beauty experts at L’Oreal found that almost half of all women over forty are choosing to NOT dye the grey out of their hair. The benefits of going grey: You don’t have to worry about dying and re-dying to cover roots. You don’t have to constantly subject your hair to dyes. You save money (not buying dye or going to the salon) and time (not dying your hair at home or sitting in the salon while someone else does it for you). You’ve earned those grey hairs — … Continue reading
