Get Out of Bed and Get to Work

We often talk about motivation here in the Home Business blog—ways to get energized and stay focused on building our home businesses. Some days, however, we may not feel particularly energized and staying motivated may be a huge challenge. There are those days when what we really need to do is just get ourselves dressed and show up—whether our heart and energy are in it or not. I really do believe that things cannot always be a joy and a romp. I also believe that sometimes, the secret to success and well-being is to simple get up, get out there, … Continue reading

When Work gets Depressing

We try to stay motivated and chipper and focused on our home businesses–building them up and ironing out the wrinkles. No matter how chipper and encouraged we might be some of the time, there are going to be times when trying to work at our home businesses can be downright depressing. What should we do when work gets hard and depression sets in? Should we take it as a sign and give up? Should we forge on through? What does it mean when work at our home businesses gets depressing? I do not care how much you love your work … Continue reading

What Gets Your Creativity Going?

We can read all the “how to” business books in the world but that will not necessarily make us better business people. The trick is to figure out what motivates us and what we respond to. When it comes to getting creative, we really need to tap into our own resources and determine what gets our creative juices flowing. We are all different. Recently, I was talking with a friend of mine who is just starting to work at building a home business and after making several suggestions, she finally said to me: “That just doesn’t work for me. I’m … Continue reading

Judging TV Picture Quality on the Sales Floor

When shopping for a new television, you walk into the electronics store and are instantly confronted by a bank of televisions all showing the same signal that has been split multiple times. It is hard to judge the quality of the picture while staring at all of those images. In addition, the stores set the televisions to attract you, often giving the televisions that they want to sell the brightest settings, and dimming other less expensive models. So what exactly should you look for when trying to judge the picture quality at the store? Here are some tips. First of … Continue reading

Emotional Issues in the Every Day

Emotions are a part of life and as much as we might like to separate out the feelings from the work, that is not very realistic. The truth is, we pretty much have to find a way to incorporate those emotions and feelings into the every day details of living life. When it comes to operating a home business, we might actually be able to make more room for feelings and emotions than if we were working the more “traditional” job and we might even find that we are better for it! I find that working from my home business … Continue reading

Some Kids don’t go in for Bribes

Positive reinforcement can be a fabulous parenting tool, as can using rewards for desired behavior and effort. There are those children, however, who can be tough cases—they just do not go in for bribes and rewards and it can be a real challenge for a parent to figure out how to influence the desired results. Charts, rewards, special privileges—all of these can be really great ways to motivate children. Not all children will go in for such things however. If a child already has everything and anything that he might desire, how will getting more “stuff” or privileges be a … Continue reading

Be Aware of what is Motivating You in Every Interaction

Perhaps it is not always possible to tune in to what is motivating us in every interaction with our children, but I do think that if we can achieve some level of self-awareness: identifying our own emotions, knowing what our triggers are, figuring out what we are trying to make happen, etc. then we will be better able to communicate well and have genuine interactions with our children. Let’s break this down so that it makes sense: Say you walk in and find that your child has gotten into the kitchen cabinets while you were on a phone call to … Continue reading

Are Someone Else’s Fears Getting in the Way of Your Business?

We have talked about how our fears can inhibit our business operations–whether we are afraid of success or failure, or have other fears that keep us from reaching our full potential. What we have not really talked about here in the Home Business blog is how to work with SOMEONE ELSE’S fears. Often it is not our own fears, but ones that come from our parents, friends, partner or spouse that actually create those negative voices that hold us back. The thing is, we might not even realize that we are carrying around someone else’s fears and insecurities about our … Continue reading

If your Business was a Color, What Color would it be?

Usually, I write fairly serious articles and blogs here in the Home Business blog. This morning, however, I am feeling a bit more light-hearted and have been imagining ways to have fun with motivation and meditation on our home businesses. After all, there is more to life than just work and seriousness. This morning I am wondering a very important and playful question—if your business was a color, what color would it be? When my children were little, we used to play this game with various emotions and feelings in order to help them learn how to express themselves. I … Continue reading

Appreciate the Challenge

We talk a great deal here in the Home Business blog about all of the trials, issues, and problems that can arise and be an every-day part of running a home business. Of course, there are plenty of joys and great things about being an entrepreneur and running one’s own business too but we might forget to hone in and celebrate those realities. I have learned in the past few years that even when things are incredibly challenging, it helps to have appreciation for those challenges. By appreciation and being thankful, it keeps me from resisting and helps me to … Continue reading
