Author Interview — Nancy Oelklaus

Today we are joined by Nancy Oelklaus, who has taken time out of her busy schedule to talk with us about her new book. Thanks for being here, Nancy! Your book is entitled, “Journey from Head to Heart: Living and Working Authentically.” What does it mean, to live and work authentically? When one lives authentically in every area of life, professional and personal, life is simply easier. Situations get resolved with least effort and best results. What this way of life requires is that we become aware of how we’re feeling from moment to moment—that we keep “checking in” with … Continue reading

Getting Through the Tough Processes

Sometimes, life calls upon us to deal with some pretty heavy stuff–whether it is a job change or loss, a long and messy divorce, moving to a new town, or whatever big challenge life has in store for us, usually, there is just no way to get around it. We have to go through the process and the experience in order to get to the other side. It can feel normal and even “healthy” to avoid the really hard stuff. I know that when I was getting started on my own divorce, there were a few days where it was … Continue reading

Fear is Not a Reasonable Motivator

In the old days (a few generations ago), it was considered important for the authority of a parent to have an element of fear. I still meet parents who think that if their children are “afraid” of them, they will be more likely to behave. While a parent may be able to scare a child into immediate behavior changes with a threat or using fear, in the long term it can be bad for the child and very hard on the parent-child relationship. There is a difference between fear and respect. I, for one, want my children to respect me … Continue reading

The Options in Digital Video Recording

We were sitting around one weekend evening watching America’s Funniest Home Videos, a program that we consider a family program. The raciest part of that show might be the accidental hit to a father’s groin by a wayward baseball. The show was on at 7 p.m., a time when I imagine most kids are still awake; at least mine are. Maybe you can see where this is going. The host was about to announce the $10,000 winner when the program went to commercial. The screen went blank of a 100th of a second and then was immediately blasted with scary … Continue reading

We Cannot Make People Do What We Want

Building a business is about building relationships–we need our customers, clients, colleagues and vendors in order to have a thriving, growing business. There is a difference, however, in sales and networking–and trying to manipulate another person into doing what we want them to. No matter how much “cultivation” we do, this is not going to make it so that we can control and dictate what these other people do. Not being able to manipulate others into doing what we want does NOT mean that we are bad salespeople or not good at building relationships. It is that very idea that … Continue reading

You May Still Have Bad Days

Maybe it has been a while since your divorce or separation or some other major life-altering experience? You may have spent a lot of time, effort, and personal work getting your life on track and, on the whole, you are feeling pretty darn good about where your life is as a single parent taking care of a family. Even those of us who feel basically happy and in control of our lives can still experience bad days. It can be a little scary and if you have weathered a particularly depressing or challenging time, a bad day dip might make … Continue reading

Can You Return Your HD DVD?

For those who are “stuck” with the outdated HD DVD system, reminiscent of the old format war that plagued video recording systems, life may be sad; at least as far as home theater systems go. As we all know, HD DVD is dead, beat out by Blu-ray whose global distribution system was far superior and, in my opinion, the main reason for its winning the race. But, the good news is that if you do have an HD DVD system, you may be able to return it for store credit. Some stores are allowing you to do just that. If … Continue reading

Secret Weight Loss Weapon: The Pedometer

The pedometer is a wonderful thing. You can get them for about a dollar at just about any WalMart check out counter, so they’re cheap. They are so small that you can wear one all day and barely notice it is there. They don’t even need batteries! A pedometer packs a powerful punch though. It is a serious motivational tool that can get you to truly go that extra mile. Whether you are walking, jogging, running, dancing or climbing stairs, a pedometer will count your steps for you. Sure, one step seems like a small and insignificant thing to measure … Continue reading

Nagging is Not the Answer

We know this–as parents, we know that nagging is not the way to get our children do what we think they need to do, and yet we just cannot help ourselves. When I was writing earlier today about how to manage reminders as a parent, I realized that there is a difference between a reminder or reminding our children of something and nagging. A reminder can be made without emotion or annoyance, while nagging is quite different altogether. Just think of what the word means: to ask repeatedly in an annoying and persistent way, to complain, criticize or pester someone … Continue reading
