Mall Walking for Fitness

I’m always looking for new and fun ways to stay fit. Mall walking is a great way to keep fit. If you live anywhere near one you might try walking the mall for an hour everyday. I don’t know about you but I get bored very easily when I am walking. I always change up my walking routine so that I don’t have to look at the same scenery over and over again. Mall walking gives you the opportunity to see new things. One of the benefits to mall walking is that you can enjoy other activities at the same … Continue reading

Going for Walks

We’ve lived in our house for nearly four years. The property contains an acre of land. The small community and large lot are what drew us to this location. The housing development is quiet and our neighbors are nice. Our toddler daughter Jessie loves to go outside and run around the large backyard. She has plenty of room to run. Unfortunately, she likes to run to the neighbors’ houses. The neighbors who have children have very interesting things in their yards. These things are particularly interesting to our toddler. She is especially obsessed with the battery-operated John Deere ride-on truck … Continue reading

Walking Can Reduce Chance of Having a Stroke

Sometimes we need to be reminded of all the benefits found in walking. We know that it’s good for us but sometimes we don’t think about the specific benefits in doing so. One of the dilemmas middle-aged people face is increased weight gain in their middle. If there is one trouble area that I have found in recent years to be my thorn in my side it is my middle. The sad thing is that having a heavier middle also increases your risk for heart problems, including heart attacks. Women especially are at an increased risk of developing heart disease. … Continue reading

Walking: A Change of Scenery

If you walk for exercise you know that it can become mundane. If you are anything like me you have a particular path that you take and rarely do you veer from it. Sometimes I will change it up a bit by starting at the point I usually end and then going backward—not very exciting! But another idea hit me the other day when I was walking. Frankly, the past few mornings I have been walking the same route and getting tired of the same scenery. So the thought struck me. I don’t have to stick to the same route. … Continue reading

When to Pray

When should you pray? On the health blog Stephanie suggested praying while walking on the treadmill. It’s a good idea. I have been known to pray while out walking along a beach or just around the neighborhood. Of course it’s important to keep eyes open but it does help to be focused. Often things you see while walking, prompt the mind about things to praise God for or bring other people into your mind as you pass their house, so you can then pray for them. While praying when out walking can be good, really there is nowhere that we … Continue reading

Why Walk With Your Baby?

Today was a walking day. We walked and we walked, my four-year-old and I. We’re walking sorts of people. Yes, sometimes we complain, and often we get wet, but we walk everywhere. Here’s why: When you have a baby, walking helps keep you fit. It’s a gentle way to get leg and pelvic muscles into shape again. You can walk quickly or you can walk slowly, you can walk for a long time or a short time. It is the perfect exercise, and you don’t need a gym membership to do it. Walking keeps you sane. When you’re sleep deprived … Continue reading

Major Accomplishments

One great thing about all of this exercising and cutting back on especially sugar is the fact that I seem to have more energy. My stamina is improving of course, but also my energy levels during the day. But first, I have to tell you about a major accomplishment I had this week. Lately, we have had more than our fair share of rain. It has been raining so hard and for so long, that the roads and our driveway looked like a hurricane hit them, a challenge for walking, even if it weren’t raining. So, I have been focuses … Continue reading

How Walking Can Benefit Your Marriage.

Walking can be good for your marriage. How? Here are four ways it can be of benefit to your marriage. 1. Walk with your spouse Walking together with your spouse can be a great time to talk things over, to simply enjoy being together, to discuss problems, talk about the kids. Mick and I do a lot of talking while we are out walking which is something we try and do most days. Yes Mick is retired these days which gives us more options regarding walking time, but even when he was working we would walk together sometimes before but … Continue reading

Walking May Not Be Good Enough

Remember those reports that claimed getting some exercise is better than skipping out on physical fitness altogether? Well, according to new reports, that statement may need to be amended—slightly. Once upon a time (translation: a few months ago) walking was considered a decent form of exercise. But now, researchers at the University of Alberta say they have evidence that proves walking may not be enough for individuals to experience significant health benefits. According to the study’s author, generally, low-intensity activity such as walking will not provide a person marked health benefits compared to programs that occasionally elevate the intensity. Researchers … Continue reading

What is Moderate-Intensity Exercise?

The government suggests that Americans engage in 150 minutes of “moderate-intensity physical activity” per week. But, have you ever wondered what qualifies as “moderate-intensity” exercise? Is it defined as walking, jogging, running, hiking, or does raking leaves count? Fitness experts have determined that a rate of at least 100 steps per minute achieves moderate-intensity activity. Meaning that if you were to purchase a basic pedometer and record 3000 steps in 30 minutes, then you would be participating in moderately intense exercise, and therefore engaging in a meaningful fitness program. For the record, pedometers are unable to measure activity intensity. However, … Continue reading
