O.J. Simpson Gets The Boot —Vows Revenge

If O.J. Simpson ever doubted that some people find him revolting, a recent incident at a packed restaurant may have set him straight. Then, again, this is O.J. we’re talking about, so I could be wrong—-judge for yourself. According to news reports, Simpson was dining at an upscale Louisville restaurant the night before the Kentucky Derby when the eatery’s owner approached the former NFL Hall of Famer and asked him to leave. Jeff Ruby told reporters he refused to serve Simpson because he is “sickened” by the attention Simpson still attracts. “I didn’t want to serve him because of my … Continue reading

Star-Studded Derby

My 3-year-old daughter watched her first Kentucky Derby today. She put on her purple pillbox hat and stood in front of the TV leaning on her Easy Ride’Um brown stick horse. (The image still makes me smile.) The gates opened, the horses took off, and we hooted and hollered. It was great fun. Okay, perhaps, not the same kind of fun that was had by the Hollywood stars who flew east for the Derby festivities… but fun for us non-celebrity types. For days the media has been reporting on the pre-Derby parties. You know the ones that included appearances by … Continue reading

Barbaro’s Journey Ends

Today saw an end to suffering for Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. After eight months of struggle, owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson made the decision to euthanize the four year old horse. Barbaro was born and raised at Springmint Farm near Nicholasville, Kentucky. The breeder said the horse was “enormous”, and grew in “two-inch spurts”. Barbaro started his career racing (and winning) on turf, but was soon switched to dirt tracks in search of the Triple Crown — three races of varying distances in five weeks. Despite coming to the Kentucky Derby after a long break of five weeks, Barbaro raced … Continue reading

Kentucky Derby Winner Barbaro Dies

Sad news from Pennsylvania—the horse that won the world over after shattering his leg at last year’s Preakness has died. According to news sources, Barbaro was euthanized today after complications made it impossible for the thoroughbred to live comfortably. Yesterday I read that Barbaro had suffered another setback, but frankly, I was shocked to hear that less than 24 hours later his owners decided to put him down. In a previous blog I detailed Barbaro’s incredible recovery, and like many of you I figured he was going to beat the odds and live the remainder of his life on a … Continue reading

Could The Tide Be Turning For Barbaro?

The horse that captivated America’s heart after winning this year’s Kentucky Derby then suffered a potentially life ending injury at the Preakness Stakes is said to be improving. Doctors treating Barbaro say, that while the colt’s medical condition remains dire, he is stable and responding to treatment. The statement follows what has turned into a media “death-watch” of sorts, since word got out earlier this week that Barbaro had only hours to live. Barbaro underwent surgery on Wednesday to treat a serious hoof disease called laminitis. (Laminitis is a painful, often fatal disease caused by uneven weight distribution in the … Continue reading
