Author Interview – Sandra Grey

Last week, I had the fun of reviewing a new LDS historical fiction novel, “Traitor.” Today we are joined by the author of “Traitor,” Sandra Grey. Sandra, your first novel just hit the bookstores. What does it feel like, having this dream come to pass? It’s a feeling I have to describe with a little background information first: Near Thanksgiving Day in 2002 I stood on Red Square in Moscow, rough bricks under my feet, my hands, nose and ears numb, a strange language in my ears and my Arizona coat losing the battle against a murderous Russian cold front. … Continue reading

Fool Me Twice – Stephanie Black

I finished this new LDS suspense novel last night and loved every minute of it. It’s not often that a book has so many twists and turns, I can’t stay ahead of it, but this one kept me guessing through the end. Megan O’Connor’s father passed away six years ago, and her needy mother asked her to stay home from college and help get things organized. Her twin sister, Kristen, walked away and never looked back, leaving Megan to pick up all the pieces. As the years passed, their mother became more and more demanding and manipulative, wheedling Megan’s college … Continue reading

Traitor – Sandra Grey

“Traitor” by new author Sandra Grey is one of the best LDS historical fiction novels I’ve ever read, and I have to tell you, I’m hard to impress. Because I myself write in the LDS historical fiction genre, I’m overly critical when it comes to analyzing the work of other authors. Sandra Grey is amazing. Marie Jacobson is a young woman of French ancestry who wants to do her part for the cause during World War II. Her fiancé, Felix, is working with the Resistance in Europe, and Marie is eager to see him again after a long separation. A … Continue reading

Beyond the Horizon — Judy C. Olsen

“Beyond the Horizon” is the first novel by LDS author Judy C. Olson and is the story of the fictional family, the Madigans. We see life through the eyes of a man in the Madigan clan from the time of Joseph Smith to our current day, and catch not only a glimpse into the history of the time when they lived, but we see the importance of family and heritage. We also see the impact fathers have on sons, be it for good or for bad. The first Madigan was Jed. He was twenty-four and not yet married, lives on … Continue reading

The Deep End – Traci Hunter Abramson

In “The Deep End” by LDS author Traci Hunter Abramson, CJ Whitmore has been in the Witness Protection Program for three years, ever since she saw her good friend Chase killed. He had been investigating some shady dealings involving government corruption and diamonds, and was killed before he could share what he knew. The bad guys have been hunting CJ ever since, not wanting her to testify, but also believing that she has the missing diamonds, and they want them back. Matt Whitmore, CJ’s husband, is a baseball player and in the public eye. He and CJ can’t openly be … Continue reading

Bullies in the Headlights – Matthew Buckley

“Bullies in the Headlights” is the sequel to Matthew Buckley’s first LDS comedy novel, “Chickens in the Headlights.” “Bullies” doesn’t have much to do with chickens, although they are mentioned briefly at the beginning of the book. Rather, this time around we’re following the Buckley boys as they team up against the Hagbarts, a family of noisy, obnoxious, mean kids who reminded me somewhat of the Herdsmans from “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.” Matthew is, of course, the main character. He wakes up with dread on his first day of school, recalling how, at the end of the school year, … Continue reading

Tangled Roots – G. G. Vandagriff

“Tangled Roots” is the third genealogical mystery by LDS author G.G. Vandagriff. When we last saw Alex Campbell, she and her business partner, Briggie, had been to Oxford to solve a question of lineage. While there, Alex began to develop feelings for one of the players in the case, a handsome man named Charles who ended up being a distant cousin. Upon her return to the States, Alex realized that her old friend Daniel was interested in her as well, causing feelings of confusion. As we go into “Tangled Roots,” we see that RootSearch Inc. has been hired to do … Continue reading

Reasonable Doubt – Marcia Mickelson

Julia was the victim of rape while in law school, and she can’t help the feelings of anger and hatred she feels whenever she has to interact with men. Now as a promising lawyer in a firm comprised entirely of men, she is working extra hard to earn her place as partner, not wanting to be held back because of her gender. It doesn’t make things any easier that her boss is a sports fan and likes to take the guys out for a round of golf from time to time, leaving her out in the cold. At night, Julia … Continue reading

Makeover – Shannon Guymon

“Makeover” is a new LDS young adult novel by author Shannon Guymon. Sophie Reid has waited faithfully for her missionary and now it’s time for him to come home. She spends hours making the world’s greatest poster and goes to the airport to meet him, sure that her future is set in stone – a diamond, that is. Blake begged her to marry him soon after his return, but for some reason, there’s a gorgeous brunette also waiting at the airport. Turns out, she was a sister missionary serving with Blake, and they wrote to each other after her release. … Continue reading

This latest addition to the Dean Hughes line-up is set during the Great Depression. Leah Sorensen is in her forties and has been struggling for years to run her farm and raise her two children on her own, her husband having been killed in a freak accident years before. She has no choice but to work day and night to keep the farm going, with the knowledge that it’s her only chance to keep herself and her family fed. The Depression has hit everyone hard, but especially the farmers. Add to that the drought that nearly crippled the nation at … Continue reading
