Summer LEGO Mania

My 8-year-old is a LEGO Friends fanatic. My dishwasher is not. I know this because of the horrible sounds it’s been making since swallowing one of the tiny plastic bricks meant to stabilize the slide on my daughter’s Heartlake City Pool set. I’m this close to tossing out the rest of the set and booking a trip to New York City.  That’s where Nathan Sawaya’s massive LEGO display is being showcased for kids of all ages to enjoy.  Perhaps, immersing my child in another LEGO lover’s colorful brick designs will take her mind off her mother’s moratorium on LEGO play. … Continue reading

Travel Deals for LEGO Lovers

My 8-year-old is obsessed with LEGO Friends.  I too am quite fond of the popular plastic building blocks, though I appreciate them far more when they aren’t stabbing the bottom of my feet. Wouldn’t it be great to have a huge area dedicated solely to the construction and demolition of LEGO masterpieces without worrying about having your feet branded?  A place where kids can let their imagination soar while being inspired by gigantic one-of-a-kind LEGO structures? That’s exactly what can happen when you travel to LEGOLAND in Carlsbad, California.  But, now, instead of just touring the enchanted theme park, you … Continue reading

James and the Emerald Night Train

An eleven year old boy who has autism saved up his money for years in order to buy a very special LEGO set. Imagine the disappointment he must have felt when, after reaching the amount he needed, it turned out that he still could not afford to buy it! Fortunately, this story is one that ended in a very happy way. You’ve heard of LEGO. It is the company that makes little colored plastic bricks of different shapes that can be easily snapped together. The bricks can be popped back apart later on, and used to build something else. LEGOs … Continue reading

Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 Video Game Review

The makers of the Lego series of video games offers Lego Harry Potter for the Wii, a fun bit of entertainment for fans. Covering the Harry Potter years from 1-4, this game combines all of the charm of the Harry Potter world with the creative game play of Lego. There is a good mix of puzzle-solving game play and exploration. The emphasis on battle play, blowing up other Lego character until they fall apart into their individual pieces, is more downplayed than in the previous Lego series, such as Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman. I personally I think this … Continue reading

Something for Parents of LEGO Lovers to Think About

Are your children into Lego? Are you constantly nagging them to pick up the tiny brick-like blocks from the floor before a younger sibling decides to make the colorful toys an afternoon snack? Now, let me ask you this: Are those Lego lovers of yours boys or girls? If they are girls, then what sets do they play with? Are your daughters crafting houses and castles from the popular Danish designed toys or are they more content building robots and fire engines? If it’s the latter, then you might want to contact Sweden’s Trade Ethical Council against Sexism in Advertising … Continue reading

Family Travel: Dolls, LEGO and Blues

Could the Mall of America get any better? American Girl fans answered yes and mall officials listened. Come November (just in time for the holidays) American Girl will call the massive shopping center home. Which means your kids have one more location to blow their allowance money on the mega-popular dolls and their mountains of accessories. The new store is making headlines because, according to company execs, American Girl is very selective about where it sells its goods. Company reps say the American Girl store in the Mall of America will span 20,000-square feet, feature two stories and include a … Continue reading

Indiana Jones: The Legend of the Video Games

By now, we are all familiar with the movie-tie in video game. After all, movies today aren’t just movies. They are huge merchandising franchises that produce everything from tie-in toys to tie-in shampoo. In fact, I even heard a rumor of one company that wanted to license a movie tie-in for insecticide. No, I don’t want to even know what the move was that inspired that one. Video game tie-ins are not surprising. After all, you already have a plot (or tasks to complete the story), characters and plenty of graphics that are already conceptualized before a single piece of … Continue reading

Design with Legos

This has got to be one of the best free software programs out there! Read on to learn all about it, including where you can get your own copy. My oldest son is crazy about Legos. He can spend hours designing and building creations. Little block people with yellow heads get to drive sleek vehicles such as a laser-powered space ship, or fortify themselves behind elaborate high tech fortresses. Sometimes his visions are so complicated that he attempts to put them down on paper first. That is why I know that this free software program will have him jumping up … Continue reading
