Shrek! – William Steig

Many parents and children are familiar with the Dreamworks movie Shrek. Less people realize that the movie was based on a picture book titled Shrek! authored by William Steig and published in 1993. The book begins with this hilarious sentence, “His mother was ugly and his father was ugly, but Shrek was uglier”. The book is different than the movie, and the illustration don’t really match the movie characters that we are familiar with. This is such a fun book, but it takes a little while to get used to the differences. Shrek is an ogre. Everywhere he goes trees … Continue reading

My Best Friend Moved Away – Nancy Carlson

Life brings changes, some planned and expected, others surprising and unwelcome. This picture book, “My Best Friend Moved Away” by Nancy Carlson, talks about one of those changes that is bound to happen during the course of one’s childhood, that of losing a friend. The book begins by showing us all the things that the two girls used to do together. “My best friend and I did everything together,” it reads, and we see pictures of the girls on the swings, making a snowman, building sandcastles, and just enjoying each other’s company. “But then she moved away,” as the moving … Continue reading

Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars – L.M. Montgomery

I’m writing a review about these three books together as they all cover a certain segment in the life of Anne Shirley, irrepressible redheaded heroine written about by L.M. Montgomery. In “Anne of Avonlea,” Anne has grown out of most of her awkwardness but still makes shocking mistakes from time to time, causing Marilla to sprout even more gray hair. The book is full of sweet and funny moments from Anne’s days teaching school and her interactions with the children. Anne also experiences what it’s like to finally belong to a large family, as Marilla adopts orphans Davy and Dora, … Continue reading

Elliot’s Bath and Elliot’s Shipwreck – Andrea Beck

The other day my husband stopped at the library and as per my request, grabbed me a handful of picture books to read to my children. Two that he brought home feature the cutest little stuffed moose I’ve ever seen, and if you know anything about me and my relationship with children’s books, you’ll know that the cuter the illustrations are, the better I’ll enjoy the book. The first book is “Elliot’s Bath.” It snookered me in right from the start with the front cover – Elliot is sitting in the bathtub, a cute rubber ducky at his knee, and … Continue reading
