Laboring on Labor Day

So did you get to enjoy having off on Labor Day? Not me…I was laboring. In fact, I was squeezing in two days worth of work so my schedule could be cleared for Tuesday. My husband and I spent the day together in celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary. But I was okay with laboring on Labor Day. My husband had to work anyway, so it wasn’t that big of a deal. I can always arrange to have a day off during the week by doing that day’s work over the weekend, instead. But I really like to try and … Continue reading

Labor Day

I’ve observed that often every group of people imagines themselves to work harder than any other group. It might be husbands and wives, the so-called “mommy wars” between stay-at-home moms and working moms, kids who are jealous that their parents don’t have to study any more and parents who forget just how hard it is to be a kid sometimes. Sometimes it’s mothers who’ve adopted their children and mothers who’ve been pregnant and given birth to their children. I hear parents who’ve adopted their children bemoaning the paperwork, the many questions that sometimes feel intrusive, the lack of control, and … Continue reading

Home Week in Review: August 27 – September 2

I hope you had a great week and I hope you are now enjoying your Labor Day weekend. There was a … Continue reading

When Should Kids Return to School?

When I was a kid we started school after Labor Day. Seems like more and more school districts are starting school earlier. Here in Mobile, school started on August 9. That seems extremely early to me. To top it off it’s so darned HOT can kids really be expected to learn when their brains are fried? As I end my first full-week of homeschooling Tyler, I find that it was a difficult week at best. As much as he likes learning, I sensed that he’s not ready to formally return to school just yet. Also, he knows his school in … Continue reading

Happy Labor Day

Do you and your spouse do something special for Labor Day? As celebrated in the United States, this holiday was declared official by Congress in June of 1894. It is meant to honor the American worker. To most people it simply means an extra paid day off work or a day off from school. However, it can really be anything you want it to be. One couple I know has personalized this celebration and made it into something more. Instead of it being a day of honor for workers collectively or one last end of summer party or picnic, this … Continue reading
