Celebs on the Gulf Coast Oil Spill

Celebrities are often the first ones to speak up and act after a disaster. Remember gun wielding Sean Penn rescuing people in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina? How about Wyclef Jean raising money after the Haiti earthquake? But, they don’t seem quite as vocal about the Gulf Coast oil disaster. So far, there are no telethons, although God love him, Kevin Costner thinks he has a solution with his oil-separation technology, which, last I heard, BP is still investigating. Director James Cameron met with scientists and officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He hoped some technology used in The … Continue reading

Cowell is going to do what he does best – make a record. He has chosen to re-release REM’s single “Everybody Hurts.” REM’s manager, Bertis Downs, has said the band will waive all royalty rights for the song and that the band is touched Cowell chose their song. Reportedly appearing on the single will be Paul McCartney, Susan Boyle, Elton John, Coldplay, Take That, Robbie Williams, N-Dubz, Leona … Continue reading

A Message from Leonardo DiCaprio

I was looking in my Yahoo inbox the other day and I see an email titled “A Message from Leonardo DiCaprio.” Woohoo! Okay, it wasn’t THAT type of message, but he is an honorary board member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and was sending out an email about the IFAW’s Animal Action theme this year, which is “Under One Sky.” Actually, this week is Animal Action Week and “Under One Sky” was created to highlight “the importance of protecting biodiversity, habitat, and ecosystems,” according to Leonardo. For four decades now, the IFAW has been trying to spread … Continue reading

Green Celebrities: Leonardo DiCaprio

A lot of celebrities preach green living practices today, but few put their money where their mouth is like actor Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio started The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to help bring attention to certain environmental issues. On the foundation’s web site, DiCaprio promotes environmental programs, including that to eliminate the use of plastic bags. DiCaprio is committed to his cause, nixing chartered jets for commercial flights, driving a hybrid car, and using solar panels in his home. His 2007 documentary, The 11th Hour, which talked about various problems facing the life systems of Earth, received much praise. The … Continue reading

Last Titanic Survivor Dies

Elizabeth Gladys “Millvina” Dean, the last remaining survivor of the Titanic, died today at the age of 97 in a private nursing home in Ashurst, England where she was living. Millvina didn’t have any personal memories of the sinking of the Titanic, the doomed luxury passenger liner. That is because at the time, she was just nine weeks old. She was on the Titanic with her mother Georgette, father Bertram Frank, and brother Bertram. While Millvina, Georgette, and Bertram survived, her father was among the 1,500 that died on April 14, 1912. The family was headed to Kansas to start … Continue reading

New Gigs for Donny, Demi and Leo

He recently turned down a TV hosting job in the United States… and now we know why. Donny Osmond is heading overseas to pick up where his brother Jimmy left off. The “Puppy Love” singer is reportedly set to star in the British reality TV show “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” The entertainer is said to be close to inking a deal with the U.K. show for new episodes, which will air later this year. The show is similar to “Celebrity Survivor” (which Osmond also starred in); only the British version follows stars as they camp in a … Continue reading

Celebrities Practicing What They Preach… Or Not

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio could easily be the poster boy for the environment. The Oscar nominee has long been known as one of the most “green” guys on the planet. And now the environmentally conscious movie star is once again showing the world he practices what he preaches with the purchase of his new eco-friendly condominium. DiCaprio just confirmed that he dropped a whole lot of green to buy an ultra-luxe “green” space in New York’s Riverhouse, an eco-friendly building overlooking the Hudson River. The 264-unit glass tower overlooks the river and a park, and boasts low emission paints, a 24-hour … Continue reading

Typically, she makes headlines for shaking her hips in outrageous midriff baring outfits while belting out Grammy award-winning tunes, but these days singer Shakira is getting more attention for promoting a project she describes as important as her musical career—helping children living in poverty. The 29-year-old singing sensation has launched a star-studded foundation to combat child poverty: the Latin America in Solidarity Action, whose Spanish acronym is ALAS, or “wings.” Earlier this week, Shakira joined forces with fellow Colombian and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez to launch the campaign in Panama City.
