Deals for Members of the Military

Memorial Day has become a three day weekend that a lot of people associate with shopping and sales. The federal holiday was originally created as a day of remembrance for those who died while serving their country. Perhaps the “middle ground” between these two concepts would be represented in these deals for members of the military. Home Depot offers a 10% discount for Veterans. They also offer a 10% discount all year round for Active Duty and immediate family members of people who are in the military. The Home Depot Foundation helps address the housing needs of veterans. Toolbox for Education

My son goes to a Memphis City school, but it is a special school in that it is part of the University of Memphis.  It is the teaching school for the university, so while it does get city funding, they also need to do fundraisers to get more money. I cannot tell you how tired of fundraisers that I am!  I became a member of GoodSearch, which donates a penny for every search made and suggest to the PTO president and vice president that everyone join (most of the parents work at the University of Memphis and undoubtedly have access … Continue reading

Dryer Envy: How to Tell If You Need a New Dryer

Every time we are at the local Lowes or Home Improvement, which tends to be more often than not, since we own an older home, we always pass by the appliances department. I have to hide my eyes from the sparkling brilliance of the new washer and dryers that come in so many fashionable colors. In fact the exact reds and blues of the pairs remind me of browsing the new car dealerships. Think of all of the options that you can get on a dryer, including one that talks to the washer to find out how it should set … Continue reading

Budget Friendly Home Stores

In this economy shopping for your home should be approached with caution. It is easy to spend quite a bit when you purchase things for you home. Aside from a buy nothing policy which isn’t very practical, especially when the roof leaks or your kitchen chair breaks, what can you do? I’ve found that even in a tough economy, there are stores out there that are very budget friendly. They will help you out without breaking a budget. I’m not getting paid by any of these stores for recommending them (It would be nice if I were), so this is … Continue reading

Soft Fall Colors for the Home

This fall season, the colors for home are soft, warm and fresh. Here is a guide to what is really in style this season for your home. The main feelings for home design this season is to evoke a feeling of warmth and comfort. The colors are gentle on the eye, yet fresh and new. For inspiration, designers are taking their cues from nature. Falling leaves, pure snow, crisp winter, and harvest bounty all set the stage for the season’s palette. One of the wonderful things about this year’s palette of colors is that they are all very easy to … Continue reading

Free Kids Activities at Lowes

A while ago I brought you information about kids workshops at the Home Depot. These workshops are free for kids, and are generally held on one or more Saturdays in the month. Well, now I want to talk about the free kids activities at the Lowe’s home improvement store. The projects offered by Lowe’s for their Build and Grow Clinics are quite impressive. You won’t find any plain wooden boxes here. There are two upcoming workshops this month that look interesting. (Lowe’s offers the activities every two weeks.) The first is an art house! I’m not sure if the ants … Continue reading

My Frugal Weekend Report: September 22-23, 2007

I like having frugal weekends, days when we either don’t spend money or find ways to be frugal. Of course, the weekends can be tough. We tend to spend more not less on these days. Running more errands, we are out and about, and we have more opportunities to spend money on those not so necessary items. So, I thought I might start a weekend report as motivation to spend less. Will you follow along and keep me in check? Here is how my household did this past weekend. It lists the good, the bad and the ugly. We had … Continue reading
