The Curse of the Billy Goat

In case you haven’t noticed, sports fans are sticklers for superstitions and hardcore believers in curses. Yesterday, I blogged about a possible curse of the NFL’s Pittsburg Steelers and I began thinking about other sports “curses.” Most don’t involve deaths (like the Steelers curse), but just bad luck. One of my favorite sports curses stories is that of the Billy Goat. I spent my 7th and 8th years living outside Chicago. Even though we were not in the city, most everything came to a stop when the Chicago Cubs played and I remember watching many games on television. Many fans … Continue reading

Seattle, WA: Mariners’ Tour

Are you a Major League Baseball fan? Even if you’re not, you’ll love this tour. Safeco Field offers a variety of tours. For just $7 ($5 for children), you can take a 60-90 minute tour “behind the scenes.” We’ve done this a few times and always learn something new every time we go. For the general tour, we learned all about the history of the Mariners, and saw the ins and outs of running things at such a huge venue. We were a small group, made up of six in our family, a couple of Japanese exchange students we had … Continue reading

Free Fanpacks from your Favorite MLB Team

Yeah, it’s “stuff”. What you get varies. They’re fan packs, stuff that the franchises send out to fans who ask. Sometimes it’s nothing more than a card or magnet, other times it’s photos and memorabilia. If you’re a real sports fan, anything from your team is worth it! Especially when all it will cost you is an email. Here’s a sample one I sent to the Mariners. Dear Mariners, We love you when you’re up, and we love you when you’re in a rebuilding phase. Every member of the family is a fan, especially my 12 and 14 year old … Continue reading

Creeping up on a Legend

Barry Bonds just broke Hank Aaron’s National League record of home runs. He hit home run number 734 Saturday night against the Milwaukee Brewers, but even that was not enough to win. The San Francisco Giants still lost by a score of 10-8. Bonds needs only 21 more home runs to reach Hank Aaron’s career total of 755 home runs. Breaking that record will surely come, but then Bonds comes from good baseball genes. His father, Bobby Bonds, played 13 years in the major leagues. He was known for his amazing ability to combine speed and hitting. For five seasons, … Continue reading

The Wasted Baseball Career of Steve Howe

Very few of us have the talent required to play major league baseball. Steve Howe did and threw it all away. I was saddened to read that he had died recently when his truck rolled over in Coachella, CA. You may not remember the name Steve Howe, but I do. You heard his name a lot in the 80s – sometimes for good reasons, but mostly for bad. He was a promising young pitcher drafter in the first round by the prestigious Los Angeles Dodgers. And, he performed well for them his first year, earning 17 saves and being named … Continue reading
