Free Music – Legally

As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, my husband is an accomplished musician. His latest foray is into piano music. He’s been really happy to find so many people who want to use his music for other projects: church services, a public service announcement on television, videos, and more. He is part of a whole community of musicians who offer their music at no charge. No file sharing, no illegal downloads. Whether your taste runs more toward Bach or more toward rock, there are places for you to get free music. Here is a short list of sites I know to … Continue reading

Putting Your Goodies to Use

Last week, we talked a little bit about some downloads available at the LDS website. The simplest and most obvious uses include saving them onto your computer, playing them on your MP3 player, or burning them onto a CD in your car. However, I’d like to suggest a couple of alternate uses. Traveling magazines on CDs for your kids – Recently, with all of the traveling we do, I’ve been getting books on CD for my children to listen to in the car. I was amazed last week to realize that the Friend was downloadable. Since we already subscribe to … Continue reading

Oboe Music Locker

I’m somewhat of an audiophile and have been searching months for a good service that would allow me to backup and remotely access my extensive digital media collection. While a number of services have been available, the storage offerings have always been too small (or the prices for more storage too high), or just haven’t worked well enough to be worth the trouble. I think, however, the Oboe Music Locker and I are going to make beautiful music together. The MP3Tunes.com team offers 1 GB storage (up to 1,000 songs) and synching for your digital music—“no catch, no credit card, … Continue reading

Available and open to customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year, the iTunes Music Store is a great resource for finding musical tunes of all types as well as programming from many of the major networks and my daughter and I even purchased … Continue reading

A Parent’s Guide to Music Sharing Laws

Kids as young as young as elementary school-aged are asking Mom and Dad to help them download music onto their MP3 players. Most people know now that there are legalities surrounding downloading music from the internet. What exactly are the rules and restrictions, though? Can parents buy one song and share it amongst all their children on several MP3 players? Can parents transfer music from their own music CDs onto their child’s MP3 player? Can children copy songs from their MP3 players onto their friends MP3 players? What is allowed and what isn’t? The answer is less complicated than you … Continue reading

MP3 – Part 2 – Ripping a CD!

A few days ago we looked at what an MP3 was and talked about how they were first created. With that bit of history aside, now to the important stuff! How can we create our own MP3s? That’s what I will be showing you here today. Ripping – The process of digitally extracting audio from CDs to your hard drive in WAV or MP3 format. MP3 – Part 1 – What’s an MP3?

What is one thing that almost all of us can agree to enjoy? That’s right! Music! At least in general, there are so many types and preferences and favorites that after we all agree on liking music, our tastes take us elsewhere. Our collective love of music has pushed technology for ages. Within the last century it’s been the capture of music and replaying it so that it sounds just as good as when it was recorded. If you have a computer, there’s a good chance you have heard of Napster. Napster was the first big program to allow the … Continue reading
