Lauren and Jason: When “The” Ex Proposes to Someone Else

Last week I used Spencer and Heidi of The Hills fame to examine the pros and cons of living together. This week I’m going to talk about Lauren Conrad and her ex Jason, who came back into her life with a shocking surprise. A Little History Lauren and Jason have been on again/off again since the Laguna Beach days. (Laguna Beach was the predecessor to The Hills. That show followed Lauren and friends during high school.) At the end of the first season of The Hills, Lauren gave up an internship in Paris to spend the summer living with Jason … Continue reading

Spencer and Heidi: A Case Study in Living Together

A couple weeks back I wrote about a show I watch on MTV called The Hills. It follows the lives of four girls as they deal with friends, careers, dating, and all the other stuff life throws at you in your early twenties. One of the girls is Heidi. Last season she hooked up with a guy named Spencer. They had a tumultuous beginning. He seemed to be two-timing her with one of her good friends, Audrina. (Someone else the show follows.) Then when Heidi was supposed to go out of town but a last minute change kept her in … Continue reading

Examining Reality Romances: The Girls of MTV’s The Hills

When Wayne and I first moved to Nashville we got cable, something we hadn’t had in Florida. But Comcast had a deal that made it worth our while so that’s how we came to have MTV and get hooked on a show called Laguna Beach: The Real O.C. It followed a group of “wealthy, attractive teenagers” during their senior year of high school. One of the stars from that show, Lauren Conrad, ended up getting a spin-off deal to star in a new show, The Hills. It follows her and her friends –Heidi, Whitney, and Audrina— living in Los Angeles … Continue reading

Simon Cowell’s Take On Britney The Train Wreck

You had to know that “Mr. Nasty” (or is he the “King of Honesty”) Simon Cowell wouldn’t be able to hold his tongue too long after watching Britney Spears tank on the MTV Video Music Awards. Here are some of his kinder remarks: “Britney made possibly the worst comeback in history on Sunday night, performing her new track Gimme More. She pranced around like a zombie in bra and pants in a performance which could have effectively ended her career as a pop singer.” Cowell, who has had a hand in shaping the careers of pop singers around the world … Continue reading

Oh No, We Won Best New Artist – Part 1

I often wonder if this is what a singer or band thinks when they win this award. After all, many have received the Best New Artist award only to go on to … obscurity. Oh sure, they may still put out records or tour, but somehow they never live up to the potential that is associated with the Best New Artist moniker. I know you are thinking “Libby, give us some examples,” so give I shall. Here are some of the MTV Video Music Awards Best New Artist (BNA) winners that charted higher before their award than they did afterwards: … Continue reading

MTV VMA Awards: Oh My!

I am old, but MTV is getting old right along with me. Their award shows used to be an event, but now, it seems to be a bit disappointing. So this year, to spice things up, they moved the show to Vegas Baby Vegas. In another move that other award shows have tried before, they shortened it from three hours to two hours. They also decided to not have a host this year, focusing more on the performances. Unfortunately, for MTV, their opening performance got a LOT of attention. Britney Spears opened the show, as a part of her big … Continue reading

Britney’s New Gig and Clooney’s New Gal

BRITNEY’S NEW GIG In what may be the worst kept secret in Hollywood, MTV has confirmed that Britney Spears has been recruited to open the network’s Video Music Awards this Sunday in Las Vegas. The 25-year-old train wreck will try to get her life back on track by performing “Gimme More” – the first single from her upcoming album. MTV execs claim they wooed Spears because they wanted to start the show in “a very big and dramatic way, and she’s the one to do that.” Despite her recent string of major setbacks in the parenting department, award producers say … Continue reading

Arnold Schwarzenegger Goes Green

Well… he does have teenage children. But, that may not be the only reason California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is going green this Earth Day… on MTV. The actor-turned-politician is scheduled to appear tonight on the popular MTV show “Pimp My Ride.” Before you let your imagination get the best of you, you should know that Schwarzenegger’s appearance is part of his latest promotion to boost his environmental agenda. (In other words he’s appearing on the show on Earth Day for a reason.) Schwarzenegger’s aides say their boss’s appearance on MTV is the latest move to generate attention to environmentally friendly … Continue reading

How Do You Teach Frugality to the MTV Generation?

It was one of those rare moments that I was home-alone and bored. I was flipping through the TV stations hoping I would find a repeat of Nanny 911 or a new episode of American Idol. As I flipped through the stations I paused on what looked like a new reality TV show. I was horrified as I watched a teenage girl beg her dad for a brand new BMW convertible. “But Daddy…I waaaaaant it”….she pleaded. My jaw dropped. The father actually looked like he was considering it. He used the classic “we’ll see” response that normal parents use when … Continue reading

Celebrity Couple Turns Tragedy Into Message Of Hope

I don’t think you would find anyone who would argue that the loss of a child is without a doubt one of the most devastating events that can occur in a family. So imagine how difficult the tragedy would be to endure when you have television cameras documenting the entire ordeal. That’s the situation rapper-turned-minister Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons and his wife of 12 years, Justine went through as they were filming their MTV reality series “Run’s House.” Last year, the couple decided to add to their family of seven (they have five children ranging in age from 23 to … Continue reading
