Former MLB Pitcher Killed by Lightening

I realize that each year, sports figures die and this year is no different. The strange thing about the last two months is that it seems that most lead a long life, died at an early age, or died under some weird circumstance. The latter was the case of Geremi Gonzalez. Gonzalez had pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers. He appeared in a total of 131 games before pitching his final MLB game in 2006. He was killed last Monday on a beach in his native Venezuela when he … Continue reading

Bond’s Record Breaking Baseball Sold at Auction

What a difference a ball makes! If you had been lucky enough to catch Barry Bond’s record breaking #756 ball – the one that broke Hank Aaron’s old all time home run record – it would have been like catching a quarter of a million dollars. Yes, it is true. The owner of the ball, lucky New York tourist Matt Murphy, caught the ball last month. The 22-year-old was then escorted away from the crowd by police for security purposes. I find it a bit fitting that, due to all the controversy over Bonds and the record being broken, Murphy … Continue reading

Baseball Loving Actress Gets Dream Job and A Warning About Explosive Aftershave

BASEBALL LOVING ACTRESS GETS DREAM JOB I always pegged Alyssa Milano as a girly girl. I know; she played a tomboy on ABC’s hit show “Who’s the Boss?” But, that was on screen. The rest of the time I’ve seen her decked out in glamorous gowns with flawless make up and beautiful shoes. And that’s not just at Hollywood events. I’ve seen numerous paparazzi shots of Milano cruising around L.A. with nary a hair out of place. Now, word comes that the actress has landed what she considers her “dream job,” and it’s not working as the muse of top … Continue reading

Rollie Fingers – The IRS is Calling!

If you grew up in the 70s and watched baseball on television as I did, chances are you remember who Rollie Fingers is. He was memorable for several things, but as a child, I remembered just two – his odd name and his mustache. He had one of those funny handlebar mustaches that curl up on each end. He was also a great pitcher, which I can now recognize as an adult. He was in the major leagues for 17 years and used first as a reliever (a pitcher who comes in after the starting pitcher is either hurt, tired, … Continue reading

Creeping up on a Legend

Barry Bonds just broke Hank Aaron’s National League record of home runs. He hit home run number 734 Saturday night against the Milwaukee Brewers, but even that was not enough to win. The San Francisco Giants still lost by a score of 10-8. Bonds needs only 21 more home runs to reach Hank Aaron’s career total of 755 home runs. Breaking that record will surely come, but then Bonds comes from good baseball genes. His father, Bobby Bonds, played 13 years in the major leagues. He was known for his amazing ability to combine speed and hitting. For five seasons, … Continue reading
