The 30th Annual Kennedy Center Honors

It is that time again – time for the Kennedy Center to honor those that have made significant contributions to the American culture. Last year, the Center honored movie director Steven Spielberg, singer/songwriter/actress Dolly Parton, singer Smokey Robinson, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, and conductor Zubin Mehta. This year, the Center will honor: Brian Wilson A founding member of the Beach Boys, Wilson was the lead songwriter, producer, composer, and arranger for the group. Who is Michael Moore?

You may have seen some news about documentary filmmaker Michael Moore latest venture, Sicko, which explores the American health care system, including managed-care and pharmaceutical industries. If you don’t know who Michael Moore is, he is the filmmaker that is always out to stir up controversy. However, as conservative as I am, I often find that many of his observations are right on track. Michael grew up in Michigan in a time when most people worked in the auto business in some form. Martin Scorsese—Could This Be It?

He’s been nominated five times previously for best director, but has gone home a loser each time. Could this finally be the year Martin Scorsese goes home with an Oscar? This year marks Scorsese’s sixth nomination for directing, this time it’s for his violence-laden flick “The Departed.” His first nomination came in 1980 for what critics called a movie masterpiece, “Raging Bull.” Other directing nominations followed for his work on “The Last Temptation of Christ,””Goodfellas,””Gangs of New York” and “The Aviator.” (He also had two screenplay nominations for co-writing “Goodfellas” and “The Age of Innocence,” but lost both times.)
