Going Hog Wild in Milwaukee and Revving it up in Philly

The city known for its beer and brats is going hog wild next month when it opens a new Harley-Davidson Museum. The iconic company’s hometown of Milwaukee is the site of a massive building that will house more than 400 bikes. The grand opening takes place on July 12th and will include a slew of festivities that highlight Harleys that once belonged to celebrities like Evel Knievel and Elvis Presley. Also scheduled to be on display is a motorcycle built in 1903. That was the year that two young friends from Milwaukee, William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, first made … Continue reading

Is “The Fonz” Going Bronze?

No, Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli isn’t going to the local tanning salon. Rather, the popular character from the TV show “Happy Days” may soon become a life-sized bronze statue in a city not far from my house. A group in Milwaukee, Wisconsin just announced it plans to commission the bronze sculpture of the character played by Henry Winkler and place it in the heart of the city where the legendary family comedy called home. Organizers say they got the idea for a bronze “Fonz” from TV Land, a cable network that specializes in broadcasting re-runs of popular vintage television shows. For … Continue reading

More Midwest Fests

In a previous blog I provided a run down of upcoming summer festivals taking place in Illinois. Of course, the granddaddy of them all is the Taste of Chicago, which gets underway tomorrow. But, if you can’t make it out for the longtime Chicago tradition or you are simply trying to avoid the massive crowds that converge on Grant Park (think 4 million people in the course of 11 days) check out these lesser known, but still extremely family friendly festivals taking place this month in and around the Land of Lincoln. Naperville Ribfest. The annual event takes place from … Continue reading

Simon the Bush Baby

I live in Wisconsin… a state that doesn’t typically make headlines the way bigger metropolises like New York and California do. So when our local zoo was mentioned on the season finale of the number one rated television show in the country it was a big deal. If you didn’t tune in on Wednesday night to see Jordin Sparks receive the “American Idol” title then you likely missed the gift presented to outspoken judge Simon Cowell. On the night of the crowning host Ryan Seacrest revealed that “American Idol” donated $1,500 to the Milwaukee County Zoo to call its only … Continue reading

SPA-tastic News For Midwest Travelers

I’ve taken a hit for taking jabs at my new northern home here in Wisconsin (what can I say, I grew up in Hawaii). I’ve attempted to make amends by detailing the incredible attractions the state has to offer in many of my previous blogs and today I have yet another to add to the list. Get ready ladies… this one’s especially for you! Let’s face it; Wisconsin isn’t known around the world (or even the Midwest) for having world-class spas. After all, when someone talks about what made Milwaukee famous the answer is not hot springs and deep-tissue massages. … Continue reading

Summerfest–“The World’s Largest Music Festival”

If your family’s summer travels bring you anywhere near Wisconsin in the next few weeks I highly recommend making a pit stop at “The World’s Largest Music Festival.” For the 39th year, Milwaukee, Wisconsin will host Summerfest, an 11-day musical extravaganza. “The Big Gig” (as it’s known by the locals) runs from June 29th-July 9th and is held along the city’s spectacular lakefront. Summerfest is where I saw the Goo Goo Dolls before they were major pop stars. It’s where I received my first autograph from a rock star. It is the place that I trekked to each summer no … Continue reading
