More Halloween Happenings

Halloween is less than two weeks away. Do you know where you will be celebrating the creepy night? Your options are virtually limitless given the incredible amount of Halloween-related festivals, parties, and attractions being offered around the nation. I’ve covered quite a few of them in this blog. However, just when I think I’ve completed my list I find a few more frightful delights… like these: PENNSYLVANIA “Terror Behind the Walls” is not for the faint of heart. If you frighten easily you’ll want to stay away from Pennsylvania’s former Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Or, at least wait until … Continue reading

Taking a family vacation often involves meticulous planning and more importantly, careful budgeting. If you haven’t gotten started on either these next travel treats may offer incentive for you to do so. One doesn’t take place until next summer (which gives you ample time to sock some money away) and the other is a priceless and popular mainstay in paradise. MINNESOTA Attention all “Star Wars” fans: Now is the time to start planning for the next great adventure involving your favorite movie characters. More Minneapolis Must-Sees

In the wake of the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis I have been writing about my favorite Twin Cities attractions. I realize the bridge tragedy is causing many to amend their travel plans and find alternate routes in the Minneapolis area, but hopefully the incident won’t deter you from visiting. The Twin Cities is a vibrant space that has so much to offer. Here now are a few more of my favorite places to visit in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and whenever I visit the Minnesota Landscape … Continue reading

Minneapolis’ Must-See Attractions

In a previous blog I wrote about the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge in Minneapolis. In the wake of the tragedy many visitors have been forced to amend their travel plans to the Twin Cities. According to officials, for at least the next 15 months, drivers will have to find alternate routes to get to and from the city and the northern suburbs. Despite the fact that it will be a challenge (and a frustration) for most travelers, it doesn’t take away from the vibrancy of the Twin Cities. The Minneapolis-St. Paul area has so much to offer visitors … Continue reading

Minneapolis’ Road To Recovery

Wednesday’s collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge hit close to home for me. Not only do I have friends and family who live in Minnesota (my cousin’s husband is a doctor at a hospital where many of the bridge victims were treated), but I have crossed that bridge many times myself. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the 35W bridge, it is a major Twin Cities artery. It connects downtown Minneapolis with the University of Minnesota and the northern suburbs. The bridge is packed every day. Typically, you have about 140,000 vehicles (bumper to bumper) trying to speed … Continue reading

Marriage Laws: Minnesota, Marriage Visas & Social Security Numbers

As you know I’ve been writing a series on Marriage Laws in the 50 United States and I’ve discovered that the laws are changing all the time, even on pieces that I wrote just a couple of weeks ago. Does that sound familiar? I just wrote about marriage license law change in Delaware and today, we’re talking about a case in Minnesota where one couple is suing two Hennepin County officials as well as the commissioner for the state’s Department of Health. So What’s Up? It seems that Shira Levenson traveled to Peru for a summer backpacking trip in 2005. … Continue reading

Marriage Laws – Wisconsin & Minnesota

We’re backtracking a little to swing through Wisconsin and Minnesota on our 50 state tour of state marriage laws and we’re going to take a moment here in Wisconsin because there are some interesting tidbits that you need to be aware of when applying for a marriage license in the state. Wisconsin First and foremost, each county in Wisconsin may have different requirements, so be sure that you contact your local County Clerk for what specific requirements your county may have prior to going down to apply for your marriage license. Your marriage license fee is about $80 and you … Continue reading

A Mall Worth Traveling To

Bloomington, Minnesota’s average annual temperature is about 45 degrees. But, it’s not the weather that draws millions to the area each year. Rather, visitors head to the Minneapolis suburb for another reason—the Mall of America. It was the biggest indoor mall in the country when it opened in 1992, but in the years since it has been eclipsed by shopping centers in Ohio and Pennsylvania respectively. Now it wants its top spot back. In previous blogs I’ve shared my budget-busting (yet thrilling) jaunts to the mall. I never tire of making the five hour drive from my home to hit … Continue reading

Popular Comedian Makes A Run For Congress

You laughed at him on “Saturday Night Live” and laughed with him on Comedy Central, now comedian Al Franken wants you to start taking him seriously. Franken announced Wednesday that he is changing careers and will run for the Senate in 2008. He will be seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Minnesota’s Republican incumbent Norm Coleman. The former “Saturday Nigh Live” regular made the announcement on the last day of his show on the liberal radio network Air America. His decision to run brings national attention to the race, in which yet another Hollywood star makes a run for office. … Continue reading

Country Star vs. Bear—The Outcome

A few months ago I blogged about Troy Lee Gentry being charged with falsely registering a captive bear as being killed in the wild. Much to my surprise the charge came with a hefty penalty and I was curious to see how the popular country singer would respond. Turns out Gentry decided to plead guilty to the charges. Actually, he decided to accept a plea deal offered by federal prosecutors. According to news reports, under the plea, the 39-year-old singer will pay a $15,000 fine, give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years, and forfeit both the … Continue reading
