Murphy’s Pick for Best Dog Park

This past Thanksgiving we drove to Denver like we did two years ago for Christmas. Murphy was the first one out the door and to the car when we asked, “Want to go to Grandma Dorothy’s house again?” Boy did he! Not only does his Grandma Dorothy live literally on the edge of Cherry Creek State Park (which means a park walk everyday, a couple times a day), but she lives five minutes from the best dog park Murph’s ever been to. It’s also part of Cherry Creek State Park and it’s just off Parker Road. I don’t know what … Continue reading

Murphy’s Fan Club

I don’t know how he does it, but in both neighborhoods he’s lived in Murphy has acquired a fan base. Mostly the kids in the neighborhood, but he has his people admirers as well as a host of dog fans too. In Jacksonville At our old house, the first one Murph ever knew, I could understand why the neighborhood kids initially were drawn to him. He was a puppy. Not a newborn puppy, we’d gotten him when he was about five months old, but he was still puppyish enough. One of our across-the-street neighbors had three boys. At the time, … Continue reading

Murphy, Tabby, or Kitty: Who’s to Blame?

When it used to only be Murphy and Kitty I could pretty much figure out whose mess was whose or who was to blame when something went awry in our house. If I found a hairball, it was Kitty’s. Murph’s puke looks a lot different than Kitty’s (mainly because since he’s so much bigger there’s usually so much more of it) so that was an easy deduction. If something was knocked off a table, it was usually Kitty’s fault since he likes to whap things off counters. However, there’ve been a couple of times when one was wrongly charged in … Continue reading

Adventures with Murphy: Spotting Albino Critters

Today while I was walking Murphy we spotted yet another albino critter –this time a pure white chipmunk. What’s the Deal? I don’t know what it is about Murph. I don’t know if he draws them to him because he’s a white critter magnet of some kind. I don’t know if it’s because we take so many walks and that puts us in the right places to spot them. I don’t know if it has something to do with where we live –that maybe albino animals are more prevalent in the South. All I know is that I’ve walked dogs … Continue reading

How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By Them

Today is the third Saturday in October which means it’s Sweetest Day. Origins From what I could find while surfing the net, Sweetest Day was first celebrated in Cleveland in 1922. It was started by Herbert Birch Kingston who wanted to do something nice for underprivileged people such as orphans and the sick. He decided to take them candy to brighten their lives. (In addition to having a philanthropic heart he also happened to work for a candy company.) Well, candy companies have seen a way to help them sell some more product, so they’re all about promoting the day … Continue reading

How We Celebrated Murphy’s Sixth Birthday

Photo By Arif Budiman Yesterday marked the sixth year anniversary of when Murph picked us out at the animal control shelter and we broke down and brought him home. Since we don’t know when Murph’s true birthday is, this is the one we go by. And since Murph’s birthday marks the end of the Team Pryor September Celebration Extravaganza, we had to wrap it up right. Double Parkin’ It Murph loves to take walks and go for rides, and if you combine those with a trip to the park…wow. That’s a big day in Murph’s world. After we did our … Continue reading

Murph and the Flying Monkey

I had first spied the Flying Monkey in the Things You Never Knew Existed catalog last year. I knew the perfect recipient for it: my sister. She was turning 50, but rather than do the traditional “Over the Hill” stuff most people do for big birthdays, I decided to go the opposite way. I was going to gift her with all things childish and fun. I had not seen the Flying Monkey in action, but it sounded great. Supposedly you held it like a slingshot, pulled back, and released, letting it sail through the air wherein it was supposed to … Continue reading

Murphy and Kitty and a Hurricane Named Frances

Just as September always reminds me of hurricanes, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to spend another Labor Day Weekend without remembering Labor Day 2004. Lights Out, Uh Huh, Dance, Dance, Dance! At one p.m. on Labor Day 2004 the electricity went out. It would not come back on for another three and a half days. I was napping on the couch, and I think Wayne was too, when the commotion started. Sirens, to be exact. We woke to see neighbors running up the street. We went out to investigate the brew ha-ha and learned a branch had fallen … Continue reading

Murphy’s Best Friend: Tucker, the 80 Pound Wonder Dog

Murph at Tuck’s Birthday Party. (Tucker’s the rust colored dog to the right of Murph.) In honor of Best Friends Day, I thought it’d be fun to profile Murph’s all time bestest bud in the whole wide world: Tucker Joseph. (Or, as I like to call him, Tuck Tuck Toodle Bottoms.) How They Met When we adopted Murphy, he was about the friendliest little pup around. He was always eager to meet other dogs. (Kind of reminds me of Aimee’s thoughts on being a dog and how the world would be a better place if we were all a little … Continue reading

How Murphy, Tabby, and Kitty Did for Father’s Day

After a lot of thinking about what to get Wayne for Father’s Day, it turns out we did pretty well this year. Even if we didn’t find any unique “from the cat/dog” presents, we fared okay after all. The cards were great. Murphy’s stole Wayne’s heart. It was a picture of a bulldog staring up with big eyes. The outside read: “If I looked up to you anymore…” and the inside finished with “…my neck would hurt.” Murph then went on to write a lot of specifics in the card about why he looks up to his “papa” so much. … Continue reading
