Nashville Gets Flood Relief

Nashville was devastated by flooding on the first of May. Almost 2,000 homes were lost and damages could be as much as $1.5 billion if not more. Fortunately, having the moniker of “Music City” is paying off for Nashville. Musicians from all over are uniting to help the city recover. On the 16th, GAC Network held “Music City Keep On Playin’ – A Benefit For Flood Relief,” a concert and telethon at the Ryman Auditorium. The Ryman was the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 until 1974. Due to flooding at the Grand Old Opry House, the show … Continue reading

Five of Nashville’s Best Breakfast Spots

Whether you’re a visitor to the Music City or a local, nothing starts off a day better than a good breakfast. Below are my picks for five of Nashville’s best breakfast spots. 1. The Loveless Motel and Cafe – Fried chicken and made-from-scratch biscuits beloved by hungry travelers navigating Highway 100 made the Loveless Cafe famous, but it also serves up an excellent Southern-style breakfast. Besides the abundance of good food, the fun of eating at the Loveless Cafe is the setting. The restaurant proper resides in what was once a home, circa early 1900s. (The original house still remains, … Continue reading

Unique Summer Destinations

Forget about the annual trip to the beach and ditch the traditional getaway to the amusement park, if you are looking for a real thrill this summer pack up the family and head to Nashville, Tennessee to explore the Bell Witch Cave. Movie fans might be familiar with the notorious site that has been the subject of ghost stories for two centuries. The cave is tied to the legend of John Bell, a local farmer, who died in 1820 — three years after the family reported a spirit named Kate was terrorizing them. The legend has been the subject of … Continue reading

The Case of Jane Dog

Jane Dog (as in Jane Doe, just canineized) is the name given to a dog here in Nashville who lost her life in a most violent way. A dog without a name and without any owners ever stepping forth to claim she had belonged to them. Her story infuriated all who heard it and made many speak up and want to make sure justice was delivered to those who harmed her. Jane Dog’s Story It happened last summer. June 2007 to be more precise. Five boys set a dog on fire. For fun. Just to see what would happen. What … Continue reading

Did the Dog That Helped Catch the Wooded Rapist Catch Someone I Know?

There’s been a big story here in Nashville the past few days. A man suspected of being what police had dubbed “The Wooded Rapist” was arrested earlier this week. News broke about the arrest on Thursday. I was watching with my mom when police held a press conference in which they said they believed they had caught the man thought to be a serial rapist. One who had terrorized certain neighborhoods in Nashville for nearly 14 years. What caught my eye was not that it was a breaking story, but because the picture of the suspect on the screen looked … Continue reading

The Next Hannah Montana Must Have

The next thing your kid is going to want is a flight to Nashville on Sunday. There will be an open casting call at the Sommet Center by Walt Disney Studios for extras to appear in “a major motion picture based on a hit television series starring a well known pop teen sensation.” Since we all know the Hannah Montana movie will be shot in Nashville, this seems a bit of a no-brainer. Let’s see…hit Disney television series…Mickey Mouse Clubhouse? Not likely. Mickey has ceased to be a pop teen sensation as he’s fairly elderly now. The biggest television series … Continue reading

A Report on the Dog Days Festival

It was big doings for dogs in Nashville this weekend. It was the annual Dog Days Festival at Centennial Park, which celebrated Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and benefited the Nashville Humane Association. Of course we took Murphy. And I’m kicking myself because I forgot my camera. (Better to forget that than to forget Murph, though!) There was tons to take pictures of. I’ll try my best to paint the scene with words. Who let the dogs out? Price of admission was $5 per person (dogs got in free). The “festival grounds” was a frenzy of four-legged furry friends and … Continue reading

Traveling To Tennessee

In 1996 I was driving alone from Wisconsin to Atlanta, Georgia. I had just gotten a job field producing and reporting for a news agency that was documenting the Summer Olympics from start to finish. I was thrilled about my new gig, but far less enthused about making the long drive with all of my belongings by myself. Regardless, the road trip proved to be quite eventful and extremely educational. It was on this trip that I would experience what life was like in Tennessee (if only for a couple of days). My first visit to the state was brief … Continue reading

Country Music’s New Home and Bruce’s Big Gig

COUNTRY MUSIC’S NEW HOME Dolly Parton, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, and Brenda Lee… they are just a few of the big name country entertainers whose work has a new home today. A two-story brick structure rich in history is now the home of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The new Hall of Fame shares space with students enrolled in a songwriting major at Belmont University. Which is just fine by Parton. “It’s nice to know now we have a home… it was a long time coming,” the legendary singer/songwriter told reporters at an event promoting the new Hall of … Continue reading

Right now tens of thousands of travelers are preparing to leave on their annual pilgrimage to Memphis, Tennessee. The Elvis die-hards will spend the next week celebrating the life and times of their favorite entertainer at his Graceland home. Memphis is a fabulous place to visit, but Tennessee is also home to another wonderfully family-friendly city—Nashville. If you are traveling to the area with family members of varying ages consider making pit stops at the following attractions. They all offer activities to keep even the youngest member in your group happy. Nashville Zoo at Grassmere The Nashville Zoo is considered … Continue reading
