Star’s Death Occasions a Reminder of When and How to Mention Adoption

Other bloggers in this blog have written about Positive Adoption Language and the impact of adoption words. I’m hardly a “word usage Nazi” on the warpath for political correctness, but two things this week have left me wishing our culture would be just a little bit more sensitive to my children. One usage of adoption language not mentioned much in the above blogs is the use of the term “adopted” when there is no purpose for it. There may be a reason to mention adoption in a story involving a family with genetic illness, or when adoption explains a condition … Continue reading

Patrick Swayze Dies at 57

This is the blog I had dreaded doing. I knew it was coming, but I also knew that the day it happened, I would be really sad. When someone lives a long life, you can always say, well, they lived a long life. In cases like DJ AM, you wonder if survivor guilt drove him back to his addiction. With someone like Michael Jackson, we knew for years he didn’t look healthy. And, although we have known for a year that Patrick Swayze was battling a fight he probably wouldn’t win, I think it hurts so much because he did … Continue reading

Actors that Turned Down Iconic Roles – Part Three

Okay, I promise I will stop after this one! I just find it fascinating to think of certain actors in certain roles: John Cusack as John Bender in The Breakfast Club? No doubt that Judd Nelson was perfect in this role, but how would John Cusack have faired? It certainly didn’t hurt his career to miss this role. Judd Nelson on the other hand… Bruce Willis as Sam Wheat in Ghost? Yep, apparently this one was given to Bruce Willis to read first, but he thought playing a ghost would be bad for his career. Wait, didn’t he play a … Continue reading

Patrick Swayze Hospitalized and Lisa Bonet Gives Birth

Actor Patrick Swayze has been hospitalized after he was diagnosed with pneumonia. This caused Swayze to miss the Television Critics Association (TCA) press event for his new show “The Beast,” which premieres on A&E January 15th. A&E President Abbe Raven spoke at the event, saying “As we arrive here this morning we have some news. Patrick Swayze has checked himself into the hospital. However, he asked us specifically to go forward with today’s panel. We wish him the very best in his recovery.” A source close to Patrick told PEOPLE that he is not close to death and merely checked … Continue reading

Life and Death: Patrick Swayze and Willie Aames

It is funny how two celebrities can face death in different ways. As you know, Patrick Swayze has stage-4 pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is a tough one – there are usually no symptoms, so when it is discovered, it is in an advanced state and if very, very lucky, the patient may get five more years of life. (Photo by Alan Light is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 License) I have always thought Patrick Swayze was a pretty classy guy – I mean he has been married to the same woman for 33 years, which is like a 100 … Continue reading

Clay Aiken Blogs, Patrick Swayze Experiences a “Miracle,” and Amy Adams is Engaged

He is almost a dad himself, but Clay Aiken is blogging about a recent UNICEF trip he took to Somalia and Kenya. He talks about how the violence in each country has left thousands of children homeless. Even as things are looking better, many children have not returned to school. Aiken wrote, “Getting children back to school is vital for their protection, and helps build a sense of normalcy in their lives. The re-establishment of schools in the most difficult circumstances is a testament to the commitment of UNICEF and to Kenyans.” He went on to say that every child … Continue reading

Jessica Alba Gives Birth and Patrick Swayze’s Back to Work

Fresh off her marriage to Cash Warren, Jessica Alba has given birth to a baby girl. The baby is named Honor Marie Warren and she was born June 7th. This is the first child for the couple who met while working on the set of Fantastic Four. Alba starred in the movie while Warren was a director’s assistant. The couple became engaged in December and married on May 19th in a low-key courthouse ceremony in Beverly Hills. As far as I can tell, Alba has the right idea about being a mom. When asked by Fit Pregnancy magazine what type … Continue reading

Celebrity Health Updates: Good News/Bad News

Cancer-stricken actor Patrick Swayze is finally setting the record on his health. According to the “Ghost” star, fans shouldn’t believe what they read in tabloids. Swayze says he is responding well to treatment for pancreatic cancer and “feels great.” The actor issued a public statement to PEOPLE magazine yesterday saying that he continues to live a full and busy life despite being diagnosed with the insidious disease. The statement read in part: “Thought I’d give you guys a little update. Lisa and I have been back and forth from New Mexico enjoying the arrival of spring and new baby calves. … Continue reading

Patrick Swayze Renews Wedding Vows

Cancer-stricken actor Patrick Swayze and his wife Lisa Niemi are still in love with each other after 30 years of marriage and they wanted the world to know it. Well, perhaps not the entire world, but certainly their close family members and friends. So the couple did what millions of married folks do each year—they renewed their wedding vows during an intimate sunset ceremony in New Mexico. Only unlike most couples the Swayze’s return trip to the altar was tainted with a touch of sadness. Reports say the actor, who is battling pancreatic cancer, wasn’t sure if he was going … Continue reading

Curing Patrick Swayze

“We can cure Patrick Swayze.” Or so claims three doctors who want to give the actor a new lease on life with revolutionary new cancer treatments. The “Ghost” star was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year and since then he has been keeping a low profile. But, the 55-year-old’s name returned to the headlines yet again this week after three self-proclaimed cancer “experts” offered to treat the actor with experimental techniques they consider “miraculous.” Dr. Howard May, Robert Krupa and Dr. Jim Howenstine insist they have the tools to help Swayze beat cancer and they went straight to the … Continue reading
