Primary Time: Loving Our Children

The recent home teaching message given by President Hinckley has made me start thinking of the things that I can do to help make the gospel more central in my home, for their sakes. I am already trying to do the things that President Hinckley talks about but I still can find ways to improve. It is so important to remember that children are a blessing and a responsibility. President Hinckley urged us to love, teach and respect our children. He also suggested that we pray with and for them. I think that prayer is a very important habit to … Continue reading

Primary Time: Left Behind in Nursery

The New Year is fast approaching and with it comes advancement in Primary. If you have a child in the nursery you may be thinking about him moving up. But what happens to those children who miss the cutoff by a few days or weeks. It can be a difficult transition for them to see their friends move up while they are left with the “babies” in nursery. Here are a few tips to help you get through this difficult time. 1) You should continue to have your child attend nursery. This struggle may be an ongoing one, but you … Continue reading

Primary Time: December 2007 Sharing Time Theme

The Sharing Time theme for December is “Jesus Christ once lived on earth and I have the faith that He will again.” The scripture for the month is Acts 1:11 “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” There is not a specific song associated with the month, although the sharing times do have the children sing Christmas songs and songs about Jesus’ life. The theme is divided into four principles. The first principle focuses on prophets foretelling of the Savior coming to … Continue reading

Primary Time: Protecting Children from Negative Influences

Children are being exposed to more and more negative influences each year. The world I grew up in is much different than the world that my children are growing up in. It can be scary to think of all of the negative influences that are out there. However, as parents how do we protect our children from these influences? Where do we draw the line? And is there a danger from sheltering our children too much? These questions must be answered individually for you and your family. It is important to realize that your children do need the opportunities to … Continue reading

The Sharing Time theme for November is “My faith in Jesus Christ blesses my life. I am thankful for my many blessings.” The scripture is Doctrine and Covenants 59:7: “Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things.” There is no specific song to teach this month, though you may want to work on Christmas carols as a family. The hymn “Because I Have Been Given Much” p 219 would be a good selection as well. The theme is broken down into four weekly principles. The first principle focuses on being thankful for your home and family. The second … Continue reading

Primary Time: Saying Thank You

One important thing that we need to do as parents is to thank the people who serve so willingly in Primary. Often we only think of thanking our children’s teachers, when there really are so many that serve in the Primary. A simple note or a homemade card and a plate of brownies would go a long way in brightening these workers lives. You should consider the immense work and effort that the Primary presidency completes each week. They handle calling the teachers, making sure every class has a teacher each week. They set up Primary each week, conduct, and … Continue reading

Primary Time: My Child Won’t Go to Nursery!

Nursery should be a place where your child has fun, learns the gospel and learns to interact with others. So what do you do if your child hates nursery class? Recently my son has decided that nursery class is not for him. I think that this is a result of many things. The nursery leaders just changed, the nursery has suddenly increased in size and there are a few bigger boys that intimidate him. Here are a few things that have helped him to keep going to nursery. 1) It is important to be consistent in having your child attend. … Continue reading

Attending Round Table

I’ve been a Cub Scout leader since last December, but I never attended Round Table until last night. Now I’m seeing what I’ve been missing! Round Table is Scout Training that takes place on the district level. You meet together as a district and attend training meetings that fit into two categories –general for the program, which includes things like policies and procedures, keeping Scouting safe, where to get help, and the like, and specific – what each group needs, tailored to them. Last night I attended New Leader Essentials. While none of the information was shockingly new to me, … Continue reading

Primary Time: 2008 Theme

The new 2008 theme for Primary Sharing time has been announced. The overlying theme is “I Am a Child of God.” This is a wonderful thing to teach your children. It is one of the most important things that children can learn. Once they realize that Heavenly Father is real and loves them, their entire outlook on life will change. It is important to help your children to realize that Heavenly Father is watching over their lives. The scripture for the theme is Psalm 82:6: “All of you are children of the most High.” You can help your children to … Continue reading

Primary Time: Helping Your Children Grow Spiritually

As parents it is important to realize the responsibility you have towards your children. While many people easily acknowledge and recognize the need to care for the physical and emotional needs of their children, they neglect the spiritual needs. Each child that is a member of your family is a precious gift from Heavenly Father. It is important to take the time to teach our children about Christ and the gospel. This will give your children direction and hope throughout their lives. Of course one of the best ways to do this is through your example. As you go to … Continue reading
