General Women’s Conference: Sister Thompson’s Address

Continuing our summary of the general women’s conference broadcast which aired last Saturday night, we take a look at Sister Barbara Thompson’s address, entitled, “Now Let Us Rejoice.” This topic was very appropriate for the second counselor in the general Relief Society presidency, herself being an enthusiastic woman. Sister Thompson began her address by stating that Relief Society is evidence of God’s love for His daughters. She reminds us of Joseph Smith’s declaration that “the Church was never perfect until the women were organized.” These early sisters went from home to home, administering to the needs of the families under … Continue reading

General Women’s Conference: Sister Beck’s Address

I hope you were able to attend the women’s session of general conference that was held this last Saturday night. If you weren’t, here is the first of a four-part summary for you. We began the conference with an opening address by Sister Julie B. Beck, entitled “Fulfilling the Purpose of Relief Society.” She spoke of the history of the Relief Society and how it was divinely ordained of God to be for the good of the sisters and to bring relief to all those who need it. She said, “The purpose of Relief Society as established by the Lord, … Continue reading

Relief Society: Visiting Teaching Less Active Sisters

Visiting teaching is one of the most important functions of Relief Society. It allows friendships to be built, but it is also a system for the president to be sure that individual needs are being met. It fosters close ties and makes it easy for people to reach out and offer service to those around them. If you are visiting teaching a less active member you may need to treat the visits differently. First it is important to follow the sister’s lead. She may not be comfortable with a gospel message, but be open to visits on a regular basis. … Continue reading

Relief Society: Sharewear Activity

One great activity that you may consider for your Relief Society is a sharewear activity. Sharewear is when you gather together items and then people can come and pick up the items for free. This can be done at a ward level or a stake level. It can involve clothes only or it can involve household items as well. This a great way to help those who are less fortunate, as well as pass on items that are still serviceable, but you no longer need. If you have this activity once a year you should begin collecting donations a month … Continue reading

Releif Society: Welcoming Everyone

There are some sisters in every ward that believe that Relief Society is just not their thing. I am not being judgmental as I say that. I know that there are women who are uncomfortable in a crowd or who just don’t feel as comfortable around women. There are women who hate doing things around the house, and so most of the Home, Family and Personal Enrichment ideas, just don’t appeal to them. (I personally struggle a bit with that one, but I like the social aspects, so it balances out.) There are some women that just don’t feel welcome, … Continue reading

Relief Society: Mourn with Those that Mourn

There are times when the service that you can give to another is to mourn with them. People will go through difficult situations in which most people feel unable to do anything to really help. This is a time when mourning with those who mourn comes to mind. If you find someone in your ward is in a tragic situation, you may need to mourn with her. Here are four suggestions on how to mourn with those that mourn. 1) You should express your sorrow for the situation. Unless you specifically know from firsthand experience what it feels like to … Continue reading

Relief Society: A New Presidency

One of the wonderful things about the church is that most callings do not last forever. This means that leadership positions do change. Often when a presidency changes, the way the program is operated will change slightly. This can happen even when both the previous and current presidents are following all of the guidelines. This is because leaders have different areas that they choose to emphasize. When your Relief Society presidency changes it is important to support your new president. She is doing her best to serve you. Things may change, but this is not always a negative thing. You … Continue reading

Relief Society: Serving as a Group

The Relief Society was organized so that the women of the church could help give service. It is important to realize that one of the primary purposes of the Relief Society is to help others. At times you may be the one who needs the help. At other times you may be asked to contribute in some way. It is important to remember that everything comes in cycles. Whenever possible it is important to reach out and offer service as you can. In addition to the traditional service projects in which sisters provide service hours in the community or assemble … Continue reading

Relief Society: Forming Friendships

Relief Society is a wonderful organization that has many purposes. The most important purpose is to help the sisters to come to Christ. Another important purpose is to provide service and help to those that need it. Another reason is to help friendships to form between sisters and to provide opportunities to socialize with each other. When the sisters in Relief Society are friends with each other, needs are being met automatically. The sisters often feel more comfortable asking for help from a friend or letting friends know that they are struggling. If your ward is having a difficult time … Continue reading

Relief Society: Suggestions for Compassionate Service

Compassionate service is one of the key roles that the Relief Society has in each ward. The Relief Society is there to step in as needed and to help those who are in need of help in times of trial and sickness. At times these acts may be small and at other times the Relief Society may be called upon to perform service for much longer periods of time. As you work to meet the needs of each situation it is important to take the time to plan out a positive solution. You should keep in mind the scope of … Continue reading
