North Carolina Man Dreams Big, Lands Boston Gig

I don’t know about you, but I am bad about singing long in the car to my favorite tunes. Of course, if you could hear me, you could cringe – my voice is nasally, which is bad since my allergies are generally acting up. I’d say I sounded like a hoarse bullfrog trapped underwater. With a cold. Anyhow, some average Joes can sing well. And, sometimes, rock-n-roll dreams come true. Such is the case of Tommy DeCarlo of Charlotte, North Carolina. Like many of us, Tommy dreamed of being a rock star. But, we all know how far fetched those … Continue reading

Rock Star Babylon: They Did What?

I love the “Babylon” books – those named, of course, after the biblical city Babylon. These books talk about the materialistic and hedonistic pleasures of – you guessed it – celebrities and musicians. The first one I read was “Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood’s Darkest and Best Kept Secrets” by Kenneth Anger. Ah, this one dished a lot of dirt about classic Hollywood stories: Errol Flynn’s brushes with under aged girls (which lead to brushes with the law), Rudolph Valentino (was the “Latin Lover” really gay?), the Fatty Arbuckle scandal (so much for “innocent until proven guilty”), … Continue reading

Even Rock Star Wives Sing the Blues

One afternoon not too long ago as I was folding laundry I was watching True Hollywood Story: Rock Star Wives. It was sensational. Some of the rock stars profiled included Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Alice Cooper, Duff Mckagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), Slash (Guns N’ Roses), and Vince Neil (Motley Crue). Both the wives and the rock stars were surprisingly candid about the trials and tribulations their marriages experienced. What struck me most was how so many of the marriages had encountered every kind of worst case scenario imaginable. And I’m not talking about just one kind of worst … Continue reading

Breaking Research on Rock Stars

Okay, hold onto your seats for this one…a new study has come out saying that *gasp* rock stars are more likely than others to die a premature death. Yes, yes, I know many of you are shocked by this discovery. The study was conducted by researchers at the Centre for Public Health at John Moores University in Liverpool. The researchers studied more than 1,000 artists, mostly from the North America and the United Kingdom. They discovered that there were 100 deaths among the 1,064 musicians they studied between the years of 1956 and 2005. People such as Elvis, Jim Morrison, … Continue reading

Forever 27: Brian Jones

The other day, I blogged about blues great Robert Johnson. He died at the very young age of 27. And, 27 is actually a very scary age for a musician. Did you know there is a “27 Club” – a group of rock and blues musicians who all died at the age of 27? Some of the greatest musicians of all times never made it past this tender age. Let’s take a look at those who lived more in 27 years than many of us will in 80: Brian Jones A foundering member of the Rolling Stones, you would think … Continue reading
