Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 11:1-11

Lehi had a vision within a dream, and Nephi wants to know the meaning of the dream. Taken up in a vision of his own, he converses with the Spirit of the Lord, who explains the interpretation to him. This is one of my favorite chapters in 1 Nephi. 1. For it came to pass after I had desired to know the things that my father had seen, and believing that the Lord was able to make them known unto me, as I sat pondering in mine heart I was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord, yea, into … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 10:18-22

Nephi has been telling us that through faith and the gift of the Holy Ghost, we can receive revelation from the Lord, and this has not changed from times of old until today. 18. For he is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him. God is the same today as He was thousands of years ago. The age of miracles has not passed. He will still minister unto us the same way He did the Israelites … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 10:11-17

Lehi has prophesied to his family about the coming of the Messiah, the preparation of the way by John the Baptist, and the destruction of Jerusalem. 11. And it came to pass after my father had spoken these words he spake unto my brethren concerning the gospel which should be preached among the Jews, and also concerning the dwindling of the Jews in unbelief. And after they had slain the Messiah, who should come, and after he had been slain he should rise from the dead, and should make himself manifest, by the Holy Ghost, unto the Gentiles. This all … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 10:1-10

Lehi has related his dream of the tree of life to his family, and Nephi has taken a moment to explain that these plates are those upon which he is enscribing the more spiritual things and that the other plates he is keeping will be for the more political things of his people. 1. And now I, Nephi, proceed to give an account upon these plates of my proceedings, and my reign and ministry; wherefore, to proceed with mine account, I must speak somewhat of the things of my father, and also of my brethren. 2. For behold, it came … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 9 – and Thoughts about Nephi

Lehi has finished recounting his vision of the tree of life to his family, and he begged Laman and Lemuel to turn to the Lord and repent of their wrongdoings. To summarize the next few verses, Lehi spoke more things that were too numerous to be written upon the plates. Nephi clarifies that these plates are not the ones upon which he is making a full account of the people, but rather, a second set which he was commanded of the Lord to make so there would be a record of the ministry of Nephi’s people. The other plates deal … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:19-25

Lehi has had a vision within a dream. He saw a tree filled with beautiful fruit, and upon eating it, was filled with such joy and delight, he wanted to share it with his family. The righteous members of the family joined him and ate, while the wicked ignored him. 19. And I beheld a rod of iron, and it extended along the bank of the river, and led to the tree by which I stood. I love this chapter and its marvelous allegory. The rod isn’t made of wood or other substance that might rot away, but it’s made … Continue reading

The Gift of the Scriptures

One of my favorite things about the scriptures is the stories that are in them. I love the way that the stories about people help me in my daily life. As a child I learned the importance of following the Word of Wisdom as I learned the story of Daniel and his friends. I also learned that I could stand up for my beliefs even when it was difficult. I also loved the story of Daniel in the lion’s den and the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Their courage and example helped to develop my strong inner convictions to … Continue reading
