The Dangers of Complacency

As Latter-day Saints it is important that we guard against complacency. It is important to realize that we must be aware of the dangers that may fall to our families. According to the dictionary complacency means a feeling of safety or satisfaction when an unknown danger is threatening. Complacency can be dangerous to everyone, but can be especially dangerous to families and individual testimonies. In his talk “Spiritual Nutrients” President James E Faust speaks about the importance of spiritual nutrients. He opens his talk by sharing his experience of taking rock salt to salt licks for the cattle when he was a boy. He explained that the cows needed to have these nutrients to survive, and so the farmers would provide for them. In his talk “How Firm a Foundation” President Thomas S Monson speaks about the need to develop a deep and lasting faith. He begins by sharing an analogy about the building of wards. He learned that the roads in Western Canada are built on a foundation that is much deeper than most roads. So the roads can withstand weather that would cause other roads to buckle and crack. Primary Time: Challenge Your Child to Have Personal Scripture Study

At what age do you begin to encourage your children to complete personal scripture study on their own? The answer may vary according to the child, but I recommend that you encourage this as soon as your child is able to read on his own. You may want to have your child start by reading the easy versions published by the church, but I would not encourage this for long. Your child may become dependent on the readers.
