How Sin Affects Our Self-Esteem

Even when we’re trying to be righteous, little sins, and sometimes not so little sins, can become a problem. Whether it’s a one-time thing or an on-going cycle, we are affected in a multitude of ways. We stop feeling happy. Our tempers grow short. We feel guilty. We try to avoid any conversations that might link back to the sin we are seeking to hide. Until we repent and forsake the action, we feel miserable. We can’t feel good about ourselves and yet guilty at the same time, and in this way, sin robs us of our self-esteem. When we … Continue reading

Confession

Who do we make confession to? The Bible tells us that Jesus Christ is our advocate. I believe it is Christ who we are to pray to and ultimately confess our sins to. “My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. (1 John 2:1-2) Prior to Jesus’ coming, Nehemiah gives us an example of confession to God for … Continue reading

“Now, Go Do The Right Thing.”

If you have spent any time listening to the popular Conservative talk radio doctor-diva, Dr. Laura Schlesinger, you’ve probably heard her catchy phrase at the end of each segment of her show, “Now, go do the right thing.” It’s a, no nonsense plea cast out to her listeners intended to encourage others to be better people. The other day I was really thinking about this simple phrase. What it would be like if everyone took Dr. Laura’s advice and really did decide to do the right thing? Keeping in mind, I’m from the school of thought there is a “right” … Continue reading

I’m Too Far Gone for Jesus to Save

“Jesus wouldn’t want me; I’m too much of a sinner.” It grieves my heart to hear these kinds of statements from people who are very much in need of a savior. People with these feelings of inadequacy seem to miss the point entirely of what it means to need saving. Being “far gone” at any level is precisely why Jesus paid the price He did for us; we were not capable of saving ourselves. While it’s true that God expects us to strive toward holiness, He knows that spiritual maturity doesn’t happen over night. That’s why I believe it’s important … Continue reading

Who Will Be In Heaven?

There are many who feel Christians who proclaim their beliefs of what the Bible says in regard certain sin come off as judgmental. It is true many Christians are like this. I personally don’t ever want to come across as anything extra special as a Christian because apart from Christ, I am hell bound. None of us should speak out on such things without humility remembering not one of us is without sin and each one of us need Jesus. I’ve compiled a list of many of the sins mentioned in the Bible that prevent the entrance of a person … Continue reading

Week in Review: White Lies to White Rags

This week I talked about the potential damage white lies can do, a lesson we can teach our children when a siren sounds, God’s “valentine” to us, being the woman I want to be, and an analogy of sin. In Dishonesty and the Little White Lies, I wanted to talk about the potential dangers of telling even half truths. I don’t know a person alive who hasn’t lied and even those of us who value integrity and are better at avoiding outright lies often have a hard time with little white lies and half truths when used with the best … Continue reading

The White Rag and Sin

I was very young when I came up with the analogy of sin being like grime, and a rag being like us. Since then, I’ve heard this same metaphor used a few times. As a young child it helped me grasp the need to repent and return to God. A rag which is clean and white does not stay that way for long if it is to be used around the house. It might be used to pick up spilled juice; it might be used to dust off the fireplace mantel. The rag might even come face to face with … Continue reading

Leaven in Your Life

How often have you heard the expression, “A little leaven leavens the whole lump.”? I know I’ve heard it several times and that I have rarely, if ever taken the time to ponder the meaning, though I was vaguely aware that the principle was found in Scripture. When studying the Parable of Leaven found in Matthew 13:33 and Luke 13:20-21, I became interested in how the concept of leaven should be applied to my life as a Christian. Leaven is mentioned several times in the Bible and, usually, with a bad connotation. For example, in I Corinthians chapter 5 Paul … Continue reading

We Know It’s Wrong, So Why do we do It?

Why do we sin when we know how destructive it can be in our lives? I mean, we’ve been given free will and can choose not to sin, right? Mankind wasn’t able to complete even one generation without sinning. Adam and Eve, even while walking and talking with the Lord disobeyed God by eating of the only tree they were instructed not to. So how did they come to that decision? I believe the answer is temptation and justification. The serpent, which was Satan, caused Eve to question God’s authority, and then told her she would not die if she … Continue reading

Trials and Faith: Resisting Temptation to Sin

I am encouraged by what the Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:13, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” We will all go through temptation. Not even Jesus was immune to Satan’s temptation while living here on earth. I hear people talk about God testing their faith when they are going through hard times; once in a while, I … Continue reading
