Did You See That?

The other day my young daughter and I were taking advantage of a beautiful spring day (low 60s) by visiting a lake park to feed the birds. While my daughter merrily chased after any animal with wings (pelting them with the bread they were supposed to “want” to eat) I noticed three men ice fishing on what was left of the frozen lake water. Ice fishing on a 60-degree day when the lake had already started thawing? That deserved a second look (make that a long stare) and a cellphone “in case ice breaks call…” I have a feeling the … Continue reading

Sheryl Crow’s Looking For A Cowboy

I have always enjoyed listening to Sheryl Crow’s music; however, I will admit that I didn’t start following her personal life until she started dating Lance Armstrong. (It’s no secret that I think the seven-time Tour de France champ is hot.) Like millions of other Crow and Armstrong fans, I was caught off guard when the father of three divorced his wife and hooked up with Crow. But, I suppose, such is life in the fast lane. A couple of years went by and the new couple got engaged and publicly flaunted their relationship on various TV shows (mainly ones … Continue reading

That Stinks!

Nothing gets by my 2-year-old daughter’s nose. When foul odors abound, her nose knows. “That stinks!” she’ll exclaim in a voice loud enough for the entire neighborhood to hear. Given her opposition to all things smelly, I think we’ll be steering clear of China (specifically taxi cabs in Beijing) for a while. According to Chinese news reports, a political adviser in Beijing is taking aim at stinky cabs. The adviser says too many taxi drivers are sleeping and eating in their cabs and the result is a funk that’s driving customers away. Chinese officials say they are concerned the smelly … Continue reading

Madonna—Just A “Regular Mom?”

She’s a wife, mother, and career woman… oh, and a multi-millionaire whose name is known around the world. Despite, that “minor” detail, mega-star Madonna says she’s just a “regular mom” dealing with the same problems as the rest of us. The 48-year-old singer recently granted an interview to British Elle in which she details her hectic life juggling family, career, and other commitments. “I scream a lot!” Madonna told the magazine reporter. She then added: “Sometimes I handle [stress] well, sometimes I don’t. I take a deep breath or sometimes it’s nice to go run really fast on a treadmill … Continue reading

Singer/Actress Faces Wrongful Death Lawsuit

If you’ve been following the reports on the fatal car accident involving R&B singer Brandy then you may have seen this next item coming a mile away. According to PEOPLE magazine, the parents of the woman killed in the accident just filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against the former “Moesha” star. According to court documents, the victim’s parents allege, “Brandy (her real name is Brandy Norwood) was driving recklessly” when she struck their daughter. The court papers go on to say on December 30, 2006 the 38-year-old victim, a mother of two, was on her way to one … Continue reading

Dolly Delivers

Country singing sensation Dolly Parton has done a lot for her Smokey Mountains hometown. Years ago she opened her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, near Gatlinburg. Money generated by park visitors helps boost the local economy, and townspeople say they have Dolly to thank. Now, residents have another reason to appreciate their hometown sweetheart. Parton recently announced she plans to honor the country doctor who delivered her by pledging $500,000 to a $90 million hospital and cancer center in her hometown. “I have wonderful, wonderful memories of Dr. (Robert F.) Thomas,” Parton told guests at a dinner hosted … Continue reading

Country Star vs. Bear—The Outcome

A few months ago I blogged about Troy Lee Gentry being charged with falsely registering a captive bear as being killed in the wild. Much to my surprise the charge came with a hefty penalty and I was curious to see how the popular country singer would respond. Turns out Gentry decided to plead guilty to the charges. Actually, he decided to accept a plea deal offered by federal prosecutors. According to news reports, under the plea, the 39-year-old singer will pay a $15,000 fine, give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years, and forfeit both the … Continue reading

Two Unlikely Pairs—How Long Will They Last?

WHAT ABOUT JACK? You may remember her from TV’s “The Practice.” Or from NBC’s “Las Vegas.” Though, her most publicized role to date could be that of Jack Nicholson’s girlfriend. I’m talking about Lara Flynn Boyle and yes, Nicholson was 33 years her senior, but the two seemed to hit it off and went public with their romance at the 1999 Emmys and reportedly remained together through the latter part of 2000. Well, so much for Jack. According to PEOPLE magazine, Boyle and her new boyfriend, Donald Ray Thomas were married on Monday. “She’s ecstatic,” Boyle’s spokeswoman told the magazine. … Continue reading

Stars’ Efforts To Help Save The Children And The Environment

Typically, she makes headlines for shaking her hips in outrageous midriff baring outfits while belting out Grammy award-winning tunes, but these days singer Shakira is getting more attention for promoting a project she describes as important as her musical career—helping children living in poverty. The 29-year-old singing sensation has launched a star-studded foundation to combat child poverty: the Latin America in Solidarity Action, whose Spanish acronym is ALAS, or “wings.” Earlier this week, Shakira joined forces with fellow Colombian and Nobel Prize laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez to launch the campaign in Panama City. At the ceremony the celebrities pledged “to … Continue reading

Singer Turned Children’s Book Author

First it was Madonna… now Gloria Estefan is throwing her hat into the literary world too. The five-time Grammy winner has exchanged her piano keyboard for a computer keyboard to write about a brown-and-white bulldog named “Noelle” that beat the odds. Not unlike the famous singer who fought back following her 1990 bus crash, which left her paralyzed and wondering if she would ever walk again. Estefan, the author, has just put the final touches on “Noelle’s Treasure Tale”–the second installment in a series of colorful children’s books featuring the curious Noelle and her adventures. The book teaches kids about … Continue reading
