Football Food

Our state is in the midst of a pro football frenzy. Wisconsin’s legendary Green Bay Packers are marching towards the Super Bowl and today the entire state (I’m not exaggerating) is celebrating by hosting playoff parties. Which means I had to dig deep in my recipe archives to find some simple dishes to pass at a viewing party we’ll be attending later this afternoon. If your favorite teams are playing either today or tomorrow (I’m talking to you folks in New England, Jacksonville, San Diego, Indianapolis, Seattle, Dallas and New Jersey/NewYork) and you are in need of quick and easy … Continue reading

Shrimp-tastic Snacks for Your New Year’s Day Party

T-minus 30 hours until my dad’s HUGE Sugar Bowl. For those of you who haven’t been following this epicurean countdown, my father (along with the rest of the state) is gearing up for the most anticipated college football game ever to be broadcast in the land of Aloha. On New Year’s Day Hawaii’s Warriors will take on the Georgia Bulldogs in New Orleans. In honor of UH’s trip to the Big Easy my dad plans to incorporate a few regional dishes in his party buffet. Besides the jambalaya he’ll be making the following shrimp dishes. Fresh shrimp is readily available … Continue reading

Seasonal Sale Finds

I was out shopping seasonal sales. First, I ventured into the Half off Halloween sale at the supercenter. I had no intention of buying a ton of candy but I did buy a bag of Twix. A big bag. It was just so cheap! I also bought sacks of individually packaged Cheetos in Halloween packaging. The bags are smaller than the usual single serving bags, but they’re perfect for packing lunches. A pack has 30 bags and they were about $2.50 per pack on sale. That’s about eight cents per snack. I picked up mini granola bars too, 18 count … Continue reading

Ban Naked Popcorn Forever!

I have a confession. I have a serious addiction: I love popcorn. Seriously–my husband offered me a night out all by myself but I instead chose to stay home, rent a chick flick (starring Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant nonetheless) and eat popcorn. But this is special popcorn because I bought seasoning to go with it. Yes, I wish I were joking. . .but I’m kind of not. This is the type of thing you can only admit online because I’ll most likely never meet anyone reading this. (Unless you already know me and then well, it’s already lost cause.) … Continue reading

Homemade “Spaghettios!”

Want a great homemade treat that kids will love? This recipe is so simple to make, and it tastes much better than those canned kids meals. I discovered this great little recipe while on a pantry challenge. A pantry challenge is when you look into your pantry and try to use up the things you have on hand instead of going grocery shopping. During that pantry challenge, I found that I had a large number of cans of tomato soup as well as boxes of pasta. This recipe did the trick with using up those ingredients. It actually turned out … Continue reading

How to Pop Pop-Corn the Frugal Way

If you buy microwave popcorn, you are paying anywhere from five to ten times the amount of money that you should be paying for pop corn. I am part of the jiffy pop generation. I remember evenings, as a kid, standing on a stool by the gas stove, shaking the aluminum twist of foil on a pan back and forth, back and forth, while waiting for Bowling for Dollars to come on the television. By the time I made it to college, hot air poppers were big news, and I had to have one. My popper even had a tiny … Continue reading

Eating Healthy on the Run

Sometimes, I’m too impulsive. I’ll get a spur of the moment idea and run with it. That’s how I found myself in a classroom again. I wanted something to do while my kids were in school, so I thought it might be a good idea to take classes, full-time, at a university. My goodness, I wasn’t prepared for it. For eight years, I did what I wanted, when I wanted. Suddenly, I was studying for hours and I had no social life. It wasn’t long before I missed those afternoon naps I used to take… and it showed. I hadn’t … Continue reading

The Perfect Snack for Your Book

I’m not a drinker (Mormon! that was a Pirates joke) but I’m told there is a wine for every meal. Red wine with beef, white wine with fish. But what about pork, the other white meat? What would you drink with that? Ah, but I digress. I had a thought – if there is a wine for every meal, shouldn’t there also be a snack for every book? I have compiled the following list, a suggestion, if you will. Romance novels – how about something sweet? Strawberries dipped in chocolate, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate anything – you see, chocolate feeds … Continue reading

Choose Fruit for Healthy Kid or Adult Snacks

If you have kids, then I’m sure you’ve heard, “I’m hungry” quite a few times, right? I don’t know about you, but I often forget that snack time is coming up, and, of course, my child has not forgotten about it. I usually give her a few choices for her snack, and she’ll usually choose the same ol’ thing, goldfish crackers and raisins. While raisins are a great snack choice and very healthy for her to eat, the goldfish crackers are not so much, and I really should find a healthier alternative to them, for instance whole wheat or whole … Continue reading
