Did You See That?

The other day my young daughter and I were taking advantage of a beautiful spring day (low 60s) by visiting a lake park to feed the birds. While my daughter merrily chased after any animal with wings (pelting them with the bread they were supposed to “want” to eat) I noticed three men ice fishing on what was left of the frozen lake water. Ice fishing on a 60-degree day when the lake had already started thawing? That deserved a second look (make that a long stare) and a cellphone “in case ice breaks call…” I have a feeling the … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Slow Motion

I am in slow motion. There is not too much positive happening with this Dad right now. It has been eight days since my last workout and I feel large and not-so-much-in-charge. On Saturday, I was in Manhattan, a walker’s paradise, and did a fair amount of urban hiking – about 30 blocks in total – during the two mealtime breaks from the marathon performance of Tom Stoppard’s epic trilogy The Coast of Utopia. We decided to drive up to New York and park across the street from Lincoln Center, as opposed to taking the train – so the long … Continue reading

Rose Parade—WHOA! Look Who’s Marching

I love a parade. And the granddaddy of them all—the 118th annual Tournament of Roses parade—gets underway in just a few days. The event is broadcast live around the world and this year those tuning in (and watching in person) will be in for a real treat. This year’s floral parade in Pasadena is being invaded! The “Star Wars Spectacular” will bring an intergalactic spirit – and 200 storm troopers –to the big event. Leave it to Grand Marshal George Lucas, who will be accompanied by two “Star Wars”-themed floats and an army of costumed storm troopers to make the … Continue reading

Fat Burning Walk

Power walking is one of the best fitness tools at your disposal for burning excess fat. In fact, most fitness experts will tell you that any successful weight loss program is going to require a cardio program because cardio is the most likely type of exercise to burn fat from all over the body. Weight training is a good accompaniment to help you tighten and tone certain areas, but nothing replaces a solid cardio workout. So if you are looking for a good fat burning workout that takes only 30 minutes a day – go for power walking. The following … Continue reading

Need Some Inspiration? Get Active!

The treadmill is a great opportunity for people to shed pounds and improve their health because no matter what the weather is, the time is or the hours you keep – the treadmill is available for your convenience. According to some figures produced by the Sporting Goods Manufacturer Association International, they estimate that only 20% of the population of the U.S. exercises or engages in some kind of regular physical activity. While this may not seem like a lot – 20% is about six hundred million people. That’s a lot more than a drop in the bucket. What’s scarier about … Continue reading

What’s an Elliptical Trainer?

We’ve been talking about different fitness equipment for your home gym. One of the cardio machines mentioned was an elliptical trainer. This machine is part treadmill, part stationary cycle and part stair-climber. They are among the hottest trends in fitness equipment today and for good reason. The elliptical trainer allows your legs to travel in an elongated circular motion. Some models also allow you to pump the poles back and forth as you stride, providing you with an upper body workout to match the lower body. In this way, unlike other cardio machines, the elliptical trainer is a full body … Continue reading
