Tabby’s Special Powers

Right after my mom died my heart hurt, but not to the extent it’s been hurting the last few weeks. I think I was sort of numb the first several days following her passing. I was exhausted, both mentally and physically, and to be honest, a little relieved. Knowing something’s going to happen, but not knowing exactly when, then to see my mom tormented in the manner she was…I was just thankful she no longer had to go through any of that. That none of us did. But now the tears everyone said would spontaneously start to flow for seemingly … Continue reading

Was Tabby’s Behavior a Harbinger of the Stroke?

My mom had her stroke on Tuesday, but reflecting on it now I’m wondering if Tabby knew something was up on Monday. Ever since my mom moved here, Tabby’s been her girl. She’s on her lap whenever possible, guards her room at night, watches the sun rise with her in the mornings, and in general keeps tabs on her wherever she goes. Basically, they’ve become best buddies. But on Monday, Tabby was even more of a shadow than usual. Right from the time my mom woke up she kept talking about the cat. “Come see what this cat is doing,” … Continue reading

Babysitting Duties for Murphy, Mr. Meow, and Tabby

Yesterday morning around seven I got a call from our across the street neighbor and good friend Cindy. She was in a pinch. Her second oldest boy, Josh, was sick, but she was supposed to set up the book fair at their school that day. “Is there anyway you can watch him for a few hours?” “Of course!” Initially she needed to drop him off at 7:30 when she left to take her other son to school, but her husband decided to take the morning off. That way she could set up until about noon, come home, and he could … Continue reading

Celebrating Tabby

We’ve had Tabby a year already? It seems hard to believe. It went so fast! But, yep, we have. It was one year ago today that our lives changed forever when I made the snap decision to screech to a stop in the middle of the road and snatch up the little cat lying in the middle of the street. What a year it’s been! It started out chaotic. In case you don’t remember or are a new reader, let me catch you up to speed: First we feared she might be pregnant. Then we found out she was when … Continue reading

Chaotic Cat Chronicles: The Student and the Teacher

Once upon a time Aimee wrote a series of articles called Dogs Teaching Dogs, Exhibits A, B, C, and D — Bad Habits. Well, dogs aren’t the only ones who teach each other. Lately I’ve noticed Mr. Meow learning a thing or two from Tabby. That’s right. The wizened old fart is picking up pointers from the young whippersnapper. Lesson 1: Being More Loving Won’t Kill You Mr. Meow’s pretty standoffish with most anyone else. It’s the rare person who doesn’t see him as a creepy cat. But he’s always had his quirky ways of showing me he loves me. … Continue reading

Tabby’s a One Cat Kind of Dog Lover

I’ll never forget the first day Murphy and Tabby met. When I first brought her home it was early on a Friday evening. Both Murph and Mr. Meow crowded around the cardboard carrier I had her in while I went about preparing her room –-or bathroom, I should say. I thought the best place to keep her would be in the guest bath in case she wasn’t litter box trained. I didn’t let them see her then. I thought it best not to overwhelm her right off the bat. But the next morning Murph was insistent upon helping me check … Continue reading

Tabby’s First Christmas

There was big excitement around our house today. I was finally feeling well enough to get the Christmas decorations up. At least the inside ones. I’m a little behind on it this year. I usually do it around Thanksgiving, but we were in Denver. But this morning while Wayne commandeered my office for a conference call, I decided it was time to break out the garland and trees and our other holiday trimmings. That’s when it hit me that this is Tabby’s first Christmas. At least with us. She was most likely born before this time last year, but I … Continue reading

Murphy, Tabby, or Kitty: Who’s to Blame?

When it used to only be Murphy and Kitty I could pretty much figure out whose mess was whose or who was to blame when something went awry in our house. If I found a hairball, it was Kitty’s. Murph’s puke looks a lot different than Kitty’s (mainly because since he’s so much bigger there’s usually so much more of it) so that was an easy deduction. If something was knocked off a table, it was usually Kitty’s fault since he likes to whap things off counters. However, there’ve been a couple of times when one was wrongly charged in … Continue reading

How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By Them

Today is the third Saturday in October which means it’s Sweetest Day. Origins From what I could find while surfing the net, Sweetest Day was first celebrated in Cleveland in 1922. It was started by Herbert Birch Kingston who wanted to do something nice for underprivileged people such as orphans and the sick. He decided to take them candy to brighten their lives. (In addition to having a philanthropic heart he also happened to work for a candy company.) Well, candy companies have seen a way to help them sell some more product, so they’re all about promoting the day … Continue reading

Chaotic Cat Chronicles: The Spooky Shriek That Pierced the Night

I never know what I’m going to get around here when it comes time to turn in for the night. Sometimes I get a peaceful, uninterrupted slumber. Sometimes I don’t. A Good Night’s Sleep Most nights I have company –Murphy. He can almost always be found sleeping at the foot of the bed. But some nights Mr. Meow comes to snuggle for a bit, other nights Tabby does, and on the rare and lucky night all three of them will join me. These are usually good nights when sleep’s plentiful. A Not So Good Night’s Sleep But then some nights … Continue reading
