The High Price of Being Thankful

Tis the season for homemade turkey. If you are a parent of elementary-aged kids, then “homemade” is code for “handmade,” which basically means that the exterior of your refrigerator is coated with dozens of construction paper birds. Mine is. With 10 days and counting until Thanksgiving, my 7-year-old has already come home from school with no less than 14 handcrafted turkeys. Kind of makes me wonder how much time is allotted for arts and crafts versus reading, writing and arithmetic. Regardless, I’m happy to display my child’s feathery masterpieces. In fact, I am particularly fond of the handprint bird she … Continue reading

So Thankful for Working From Home

It is customary this time of year (and particularly today) to take stock and share the things in one’s life that one is grateful for. It seemed the perfect opportunity to celebrate my appreciation for being able to work from home and having my own business… In between setting the Thanksgiving table and kneading the dough for the homemade dinner rolls, I am also doing a little work at my computer this morning. Still in my comfy pajamas and feeling ever productive in a relatively quiet house, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of gratefulness for the way a … Continue reading

How Could I NOT Be Thankful?

There have been a few people who have passed through my life who have looked at me and felt gratitude that they WERE NOT me–they weren’t into family life or single parenthood or couldn’t see themselves dealing with the responsibilities and challenges that come with solo parenting three independent and strong-willed kids. Well, I suppose that all these different versions of lifestyles is what makes life so intriguing and interesting, but as I take stock this morning, I cannot help but feel extremely fortunate and grateful! I think that people often assume that single parents sit around lamenting their “lot” … Continue reading

I am Broke and Grateful – Three Ways to Appreciate the Things You Have

Three years ago my husband and I were both employed full-time. While we certainly weren’t getting rich we were living very comfortably with the income I was making as a social worker and he was making as a Sheriff’s Deputy. Two children, and minus one full-time income later we are broke – and happy. I’ll admit. I am not always joyful about being broke. In fact, my husband and I went out on a rare “date-night” last night and ate at one of our favorite restaurants. I remember looking at the dessert menu and drooling over the $5.00 tiramisu and … Continue reading

Madame Blueberry (1998)

In this installment of the VeggieTales movie series, we meet Madame Blueberry. She’s a blueberry, obviously, and she lives in a beautiful home high in a tree. She’s feeling very disconsolate, however – all of her neighbors have things she doesn’t have, and it’s making her blue. Her good friends Bob and Larry try to tell her how blessed she is, but she’s not in the mood to listen. If she doesn’t have everything she wants, she just knows she’ll never be happy. A new store is being built down the road. Called “StuffMart,” it has everything! Even if you … Continue reading

Thanksgiving: A Good Reminder

I love Thanksgiving! It is one of my favorite times of year. I enjoy the fellowship with friends and family, the food, as well as the time to reflect on how blessed I have been in my life. While I certainly do not celebrate Thanksgiving as any sort of religious holiday, it certainly can be that “friendly reminder” to Christians to be thankful for all of God’s rich blessings. Christians have even more to be thankful for than the rest of the world because we have received blessings from God. I want to use this blog as a reminder to … Continue reading

Why I Am Thankful to be a Mom

I’ve written about being a mom before and how much fun it is. But one of the things I’ve never written about, at least I don’t think I have written about one of the most profound reasons I am thankful for having had a baby. So let me share that with you here. When I was pregnant, I went through all the fears that mothers-to-be experience naturally. I worried that I wouldn’t be a good mother. I worried about whether I would resent the baby for taking up so much time. I worried about whether I would be able to … Continue reading

Thankful Crafts for Thanksgiving

Does your family like to share what each person is thankful for on Thanksgiving Day, or throughout the holiday season? Helping our kids take a moment to stop and think of all the things they have to be thankful for is a great idea, in my opinion. Most kids get into this idea if my past preschool classes are any indication, and little ones will enjoy it even more if you combine it with an arts and crafts project or two. Here is one idea: Thanksgiving Tree Any flowerpot will work, but a sturdy one like terra cotta is preferred. … Continue reading

Take Time to Pray: Thanksgiving

Over the past few months I have written a couple different articles over taking time to pray. Both of the articles I wrote spoke specifically about things that Christians could ask God for in their prayers. However, today I want to look at a different side of prayer, a side I often neglect. Christians need to remember to thank the Lord in their prayers. I know I often get caught up in everyday things, and I forget to praise and thank the Lord like I should. Gratitude toward God should be a high priority in one’s prayer life. I thought … Continue reading

Five Things for Which to be Thankful

When I was teaching the children’s Bible class last week, I asked one of the boys to lead a prayer. He was not quite sure what for what to pray, and I encouraged him to pray for the things for which he was thankful to God. Looking around the room, he prayed for things he was reminded from things he could see on the wall. I know that I sometimes struggle with remembering to thank God for all the many blessing of this life. Here are just a few things which I think Christians ought to be thankful for. The … Continue reading
