Last Titanic Survivor Dies

Elizabeth Gladys “Millvina” Dean, the last remaining survivor of the Titanic, died today at the age of 97 in a private nursing home in Ashurst, England where she was living. Millvina didn’t have any personal memories of the sinking of the Titanic, the doomed luxury passenger liner. That is because at the time, she was just nine weeks old. She was on the Titanic with her mother Georgette, father Bertram Frank, and brother Bertram. While Millvina, Georgette, and Bertram survived, her father was among the 1,500 that died on April 14, 1912. The family was headed to Kansas to start … Continue reading

Remembering Titanic: What Would You Have Done?

Back in November when Wayne and I went to visit our families for Thanksgiving, we had the opportunity to see “Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition” at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Being a fan of the 1997 movie, I was very psyched to see this exhibit. I’d heard nothing but raves about it from others who’d seen it when it’d been in Florida. It proved as amazing as everyone said. From the recreated passenger cabins (both first class and third) to the grand staircase to the many artifacts recovered from the bottom of the North Atlantic I couldn’t help … Continue reading

Movie Song Hits: Are They Extinct?

There used to be a time when you could not turn on the radio and not hear a song from a popular movie. But, when was the last time you remember that happening? It may have been after we were inundated with 1997’s “My Heart Will Go On.” Do you remember that one from Titanic? If you don’t, you must not have been alive at the time because that song was played over and over and over on the radio. And over again! Frankly, I got sick of that one, but I must admit there have been movie songs that … Continue reading

In Memoriam: The Animals Aboard Titanic

On this date in 1912, the Titanic, touted as unsinkable, sunk. As I was rewatching James Cameron’s Titanic for the umpteenth time the other day, I got to wondering about the scene where Leonardo DiCaprio is hanging out with a group of guys on the third class deck. A couple of stewards walk by with dogs and one of the guys he’s with makes a comment about it. I sort of took it for granted all of the other times I’ve seen it, but this time it hit me: “Were there really dogs on board? If so, what happened to … Continue reading

Secret Service Agents, the Titanic and Granny

Okay, I’m having way too much fun sharing the stories of my ancestors. But I had to do it one more time – okay, I’m not going to swear it’s only one more time. However, I want to share the story of my great-grandmother, Maidie Lois Leighton. Now, there are some disputes as to what her birth name actually was, not to mention her birth parents. Let me explain: According to the Parshalls, the people who raised her, her birthday is 17 August, 1892. Granny, (Maidie Lois Leighton) vehemently denied to her dying day, that these were her birth parents. … Continue reading

A “Titanic” Adventure

If you are a viewer of “Live with Regis and Kelly” (I am) then you know that Branson, Missouri has a new, must-see family attraction. Its official name is: “The World’s Largest Titanic Museum Attraction,” and Regis was recently a celebrity guest at the opening festivities. He raved about it during the “host chat” portion of the show and it peaked my curiosity enough to search for additional information to see whether it was worth the time and money to pack up my family and head to Missouri. Here’s what I found. If you are driving through Branson, you don’t … Continue reading
