Tornado Kit for your Baby

Call me crazy, but I love the thrill of major storms. During the winter, I can hardly contain my excitement when I hear big snow in the forecast. Now that it’s summer, I look forward to thunder and lightning storms, even tornado warnings. Of course, I never want anyone to get hurt or anyone’s property to get damaged; however, I truly enjoy watching severe weather (from inside, of course). Being a mother makes my enjoyment a little different. I still feel a shiver of excitement go through my body when I hear severe weather in the forecast, but my thoughts … Continue reading

Tornado Turns Greensburg, Kansas Green

We have just started tornado season and already towns in Oklahoma have suffered devastation. I always like to think that even from the worst of times can come something good. You may wonder how anything good can come from a tornado, but let me tell you about Greensburg, Kansas. A mile and a half wide EF5 tornado, the highest ranked on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, tore through Greensburg on the night of May 4, 2007. EF5 winds are greater than 200 miles per hour. Houses can be blown off their foundations and automobiles can fly through the air during an … Continue reading

Recovering from Disaster

Following a disaster, there is much work to do. Having endured such an experience is so utterly draining that many people don’t know how they’ll find the strength to go forward. Others jump in, needing to do something, anything, in an attempt to right things. Everyone is different but there are things that everyone should keep in mind. It is a sad fact, but there are those who will try to take advantage of people who are in a vulnerable position. Make sure people who come to you following a disaster really are who they say they are. Don’t hesitate … Continue reading

Disaster Strikes Arkansas

Living in the South, tornadoes are common occurrences. We have had some serious close calls, as well as some storm damage in the past, but Tuesday’s tornadoes were once again too close for comfort. Many homes and businesses mere moments from our home are literally gone. We didn’t expect to spend the evening of Super Tuesday taking cover in a local Wal-Mart with a tornado on the ground four minutes from that location. We didn’t expect to be sitting along the side of the highway in an extreme lightning storm waiting for downed power lines to be removed, on the … Continue reading

Celebrities’ Weekend Adventures

Oprah Winfrey spent part of the weekend spreading her seeds of wisdom to young adults in our nation’s capital. The celebrated talk show host spoke at commencement ceremonies at Howard University Saturday. “My integrity is not for sale, and neither is yours,” Winfrey told more than 30,000 people who attended the graduation ceremonies. She was referring to the times when network executives tried to pressure her to avoid topics to boost ratings or appease advertisers. “Do not be a slave to any form of selling out,” Winfrey advised the new graduates. The former TV news anchor went on to tell … Continue reading

Reason I am Glad I Homeschool: School Decisions

My heart bleeds right now for the parents of all the kids that were hurt and killed this week during tornadoes. Days like this make me pull mine closer, and make me very glad we homeschool. I realize the parents of these kids could do nothing to protect them, and I fault no one in the disasters, but when my kids were in school, I remember to trauma that was caused to my kids and me, just from a tornado warning. I would not wish days like that on my worst enemy. Four years ago, when my kids were in … Continue reading

Tornado Hits Alabama School

Tennessee and Alabama were no strangers to storms today. Schools in all surrounding counties, including mine, closed early. The students, teachers, and parents here in southern Tennessee were blessed. We safely loaded children either into the car with parents or on the school bus and sent them home without any problems. One school in the nearby state of Alabama was not so fortunate. At around 12:45 this afternoon, a tornado hit Enterprise High School in Enterprise, Alabama. The school stadium was destroyed. Cars in the parking lot were turned over and trees were tossed around. One hallway in the school … Continue reading

Planning for Tornadoes

The recent onslaught of tornadoes in Tennessee and other states have demonstrated the need to be prepared for such an emergency. Tornadoes are difficult to predict. They can happen without giving you or your family much notice to prepare. This is the type of emergency where time is essential. You will want to know exactly what to do, and how to do it. The first step is to decide on what type of shelter you will take if there is a tornado. You will want to be in a sturdy structure on the lowest level or below ground. Your shelter … Continue reading

A Tornado Bag

One way that you can help your family endure their time in tornado shelter is to have a tornado bag for your family. This will help you reach the shelter more quickly as you will only need to grab one thing before heading out to the shelter. Here is a list of things to include in your bag. 1) You should enough water for your family to last at least a day. You may want to store 72-hours of water in your shelter, in case you need it.
