Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 15:20-25

Upon returning from the mountain where he met with the angel of the Lord and saw a vision concerning the future of his seed and that of his brothers, Nephi was met by those brothers who were full of questions about the prophecies of their father, Lehi. Nephi is consumed with the Spirit and wants his brothers to understand the importance of the things they have been taught, and so he speaks to them further about the things of eternity. 20. And I did rehearse unto them the words of Isaiah, who spake concerning the restoration of the Jews, or … Continue reading

Gospel Doctrine: The Vision of the Tree of Life

The third lesson in our Gospel Doctrine course of study for the Book of Mormon is called “The Vision of the Tree of Life.” Our recommended reading for this lesson is: Tree of Life (1 Nephi 8:10, 11:8-25) Fruit of the Tree of Life (1 Nephi 8:10-18, 30; 15:36; Doctrine and Covenants 14:7) Rod of Iron (1 Nephi 8:19-24, 30; 11:25; 15:23-24) Mist of Darkness (1 Nephi 8:23-24; 12:17) River of filthy water (1 Nephi 8:13, 26, 32; 15:26-29) Great and spacious building (1 Nephi 8:26-28, 31, 33; 12:18) Lehi had a vision in which he saw a tree covered … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 11:1-11

Lehi had a vision within a dream, and Nephi wants to know the meaning of the dream. Taken up in a vision of his own, he converses with the Spirit of the Lord, who explains the interpretation to him. This is one of my favorite chapters in 1 Nephi. 1. For it came to pass after I had desired to know the things that my father had seen, and believing that the Lord was able to make them known unto me, as I sat pondering in mine heart I was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord, yea, into … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:35-38

Lehi is recounting his dream to his family. He tells them of a large and spacious building filled with people who laugh at those who have chosen to partake of the fruit of the tree, and how many have fallen away and become lost after listening to the mocking. 35. And Laman and Lemuel partook not of the fruit, said my father. This is interesting to me. He didn’t see Laman and Lemuel partake and then fall away—he saw that they didn’t partake at all. This must have caused him great distress as a parent, but he can’t have been … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 8:12-18

Lehi has gathered his family around to recount a marvelous vision he had in a dream. He was led through a wilderness by an angelic being until he reached a tree filled with wonderful fruit. 12. And as I partook of the fruit thereof it filled my soul with exceedingly great joy; wherefore, I began to be desirous that my family should partake of it also; for I knew that it was desirable above all other fruit. What immediately strikes me about this verse is the desire Lehi has to share this joy with his family. It’s not enough for … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: The Tree of Life

The vision of the tree of life teaches us the importance of the choices that we make and the importance of continuing down the correct path, though the things around us may distract us. This is an excellent story from the Book of Mormon to base a family home evening on. Before you teach the lesson be sure to read 1 Nephi 8 and 1 Nephi 11. You can open the lesson by telling the story of the tree of life. You can do this by reading out of the scriptures, using the pictures from the Gospel Art Kit or … Continue reading
