D’Oh… The Simpsons Are Going To Vermont

Don’t count out the underdog. It’s a lesson 13 other Springfields learned the hard way today. In a contest to crown the Springfield of all Springfields, tiny Springfield, Vermont beat out more than a dozen other like-named cities for the right to host the premiere of “The Simpsons Movie.” Thousands of “Simpsons” fans were asked to cast their online ballots on “The Simpsons Movie Springfield Challenge” website. In the end Vermont (population 9300) got 15,367 votes, edging out Springfield, Illinois, which received 14,634. Next week the sparely populated Vermont city will host the film’s premiere in its 100-seat movie theater. … Continue reading

Vermont: Destination Wedding Capital Of The World?

Well, not quite. But, state officials would love to lay stake to that claim—so much so that they devised a very unique contest to draw attention to the tiny state. Engaged couples had the chance to win a “free” wedding valued at more than $40,000 by submitting an online essay detailing their perfect Vermont wedding. The prizes were provided by local merchants. For example, a free cake from a local bakery, free flowers from local florists, a prenuptial agreement drawn up by a local attorney, teeth whitening by an area dentist… and the list goes on and on. The idea … Continue reading

Where To Take A Memorable Hot Air Balloon Ride

It’s known as the “prettiest small town in America,” and if you visit Woodstock, Vermont when the fall colors are at their peak, you’ll know why. During autumn the area explodes with color—fiery reds, oranges, and yellows pop against the cobalt blue sky. Currently, the area is crawling with skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts (the town is known as an ideal ski vacation destination). And, with today’s fresh snowfall the crowds will only grow as we head towards the weekend. With all due respect to those who love gliding down Woodstock’s snowy mountains, I much prefer to visit the … Continue reading

Former Senator Robert Stafford Dies

When I was in college, I was fortunate enough to qualify for loans, grants, and work-study. I never really paid close attention to it, but I usually received a Stafford loan each year. To let you know how long ago this was, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Christian Brothers University owing only $5,000 total for four years. I never realized it, but Stafford loans were named after former Vermont senator Robert Stafford. He passed away this week at the age of 93. He was the governor for two years, served eleven years in the House of Representatives, and … Continue reading

Breastfeeding At 35,000 Feet = High-Flying Controversy

I’ve breastfed my child on numerous flights—have you? One woman did recently and claims she was kicked off her flight as a result. Now the mom from New Mexico has secured an attorney and has filed complaints against two airlines. According to news reports, Emily Gillette, a 27-year-old mother from Santa Fe, New Meixco, filed the complaint with the Vermont Human Rights Commission late last week against Delta Air Lines and Freedom Airlines. Freedom was operating the Delta flight Gillette was flying between Burlington and New York City. According to the complaint, last month, Gillette was discreetly breastfeeding her 22-month-old … Continue reading

Then six weeks before her big day she learns that her fiancé has been cheating on her. Kyle Paxman planned to party the night away in the arms of her beloved at the Basin Harbor Club on Lake Champlain. Her reception venue … Continue reading
