Celebrities and the Taxman – Part 2

The other day, I blogged about celebrities with current tax woes. But, what of those that fell out of the good graces of the IRS in the past? Spiro Agnew learned that being the Vice President of the U.S. wasn’t enough to ward off the IRS when they came looking for their money. In 1973, there was an investigation into Agnew’s tax payments or rather lack there of. Agnew, also under investigation for extortion, bribery, and conspiracy, pleaded guilty to one charge of failure to report income and resigned from the office. Boris Becker tried to get out of paying … Continue reading

Holiday Pop Culture Potpourri: Stars Giving Back

When it was time for Willie Nelson to spread some holiday cheer he knew exactly where to go—his home away from home. The 74-year-old country crooner wanted to show the town that embraced him before he was famous just how much he cared so he donated $40,000 to area charities. The city of Vancouver, Washington is the proud recipient of Nelson’s generous holiday gift and government leaders there say the money will be well spent. For those of you who don’t know, in the late 1950s, Nelson worked as a radio disc jockey for Vancouver station KVAN. It was there … Continue reading

Farm Aid—Still Going Strong

When musicians gathered for the first Farm Aid 21 years ago did you think that its efforts would still be needed today? I didn’t… and neither did organizer John Mellencamp. The rocker who founded the charity in 1985 with fellow musicians Willie Nelson and Neil Young recently told reporters that he and his friends were mainly concerned with saving family farms which were going out of business. “We thought we’d have the concert and the government would change things,” Mellencamp said. But, alas, that hasn’t been the case. Before taking the stage at the “almost-annual concert” Saturday, Mellencamp addressed the … Continue reading

Willie Nelson Stands Up For Horses

Country singer Willie Nelson is raising his voice in defense of wild horses. The popular crooner is the latest to join an effort to ban the slaughter of what some consider the symbol of the West. His work to eliminate the killing of horses in the United States for consumption of their meat abroad comes just days before Congress is scheduled to vote on a bill aimed at ending horse slaughter. “If you’ve ever been around horses a lot, especially wild horses, you know they are part of the American heritage. I don’t think its right that we kill them … Continue reading

Willie Nelson Defends the Dixie Chicks

Willie Nelson thinks the Dixie Chicks got a “raw deal” because their criticism of President Bush has seemingly affected concert ticket sales. In case you don’t remember or know the whole story, lead singer for the Dixie Chicks Natalie Maines told London concert goers “Just so you know, we’re ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas.” That was three years ago, but the backlash still seems to be in effect even though Maines issued a statement of apology to the President on their web page shortly after the comment. The Chicks have recently experienced poor ticket sales … Continue reading
