What is Urban Agriculture? Part 1

When you think of farms, you usually think of rural areas, but urban farms are becoming much more popular. Urban agriculture, or urban farms, can involve growing, processing, and distributing food as well as raising and breeding livestock, aquafarming, agro-forestry, and horticulture. Why have urban farms? Well, for one, it offers city folks locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Some people also do it as a way to earn income and some even do it as a form of relaxation. Urban agriculture isn’t a new thing. As far back as 1893, vacant city lots were turned into urban farms. Such … Continue reading

Courage Mountain (1990)

I love the book “Heidi.” I’ve probably read it eight times and would read it again right now, if I was sure where my copy was. When I saw the movie “Courage Mountain” at the video rental store, I was curious, but also apprehensive. As a “Heidi” fan, I wondered – would this movie, based on a sequel that doesn’t exist, do justice to the original, or would I be disappointed? Juliette Caton stars as Heidi, now fifteen. Clara’s grandmother passed away and left Heidi some money. Grandfather thinks Heidi should use the money to pay for her education, but … Continue reading

Fairy Tale – a True Story (1997)

The world is at war and the people are unsettled. Francis’s family has been hit particularly hard with the death of their son, and her parents are walking shells of their former selves, not seeming to recognize that she’s in pain, too. When her cousin Elsie comes to stay, they take comfort in the craziness of the world around them by talking about fairies. They come in from the garden with wild stories of how they saw the fairies and spoke to them, but Francis’s parents don’t want to listen. Until one day, that is, when the girls steal the … Continue reading

The Golden One – Elizabeth Peters

As we begin “The Golden One,” World War I is ramping up. Submarine attacks are becoming more and more common, and the Emersons are torn between staying at home in England and making their yearly journey to Egypt. They aren’t torn for long, however – the lure of sun and sand, not to mention the possibility of undiscovered tombs and treasure – makes the decision an easy one. Emerson, Amelia, Ramses, Nefret, and Sennia set off for the land of the Pharaohs, leaving David and Lia behind in England with Walter and Evelyn. It’s just as well – Lia is … Continue reading

For Me and My Gal

“For Me and My Gal” stars Gene Kelly in his first movie after a successful run on stage with “Pal Joey.” His costar is Judy Garland, about which Kelly was very grateful. She was an old hand in Hollywood by this time and Kelly was heard to express gratitude to her for the way she showed him the ropes. Kelly plays Harry Palmer, a song and dance man with amazing confidence in himself. Garland is Jo Hayden, also a fixture on the Vaudeville circuit, traveling with a small group of comedians and singers. When they are all booked to play … Continue reading

Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story

It is so rare for me to find anything critical to say about “Anne of Green Gables.” My adoration for everything Anne and for L.M. Montgomery exceeds all mortal comprehension. I am very sorry to say, though, that when they made “Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story,” they messed up big time. The chronology of the movie is completely wrong. When World War I (called The Great War at the time) began, Anne was a mother. She had children who were old enough to go fight in the war. I will write more about this when I review “Rilla … Continue reading
