For the Strength of Youth Series: Agency and Accountability

Understanding agency and accountability are fundamental in the LDS faith. Without agency, the whole Plan of Salvation doesn’t make much sense. If we didn’t come to Earth to make choices and choose through our actions to go back to our Heavenly Father, then why are we here? The For the Strength of Youth pamphlet does a great job of addressing this topic. It explains that “you are being proven to see if you will use your agency to show your love for God by keeping His commandments.” I recently taught a lesson on this topic, and after reading 2 Nephi: … Continue reading

Accountability

Every person who comes to this earth is given the gift of free agency, or free will. God will never force any man to heaven. He must allow us all to choose for ourselves. I can certainly think of worse things than being made to inherit Celestial glory, but that’s not how it works—He’ll only give it to us if that’s what we want. As we make our choices every day, we have a set of results that will come about because of those choices. The results of good choices lead us to happiness, while the consequences of bad choices … Continue reading

Holding Yourself Accountable

Accountability is one of those buzz words from the land of business that has been overused in the past decade or so. Many of us may have gotten quite tired of hearing about accountability and may even think that since we are running our own home businesses we’re not really accountable to anyone. In fact, we still need to hold ourselves accountable–even if there is no boss or board of directors to check up on us on a regular basis. I know, one of the appealing things about a home-based business is the idea that there isn’t a boss or … Continue reading

What is the Right Job for You?

I don’t know. Not a single clue. I could start naming off random jobs that I know about or have heard of, but that doesn’t answer the question: What is the right job for you? Warning: This blog is going to be venting, from beginning to end. Feel free to hit “next” at any time. 😉 So I am a member at very active work-at-home forum, and I spend a lot of my evenings and weekends reading posts and trying to respond to questions when I can. But there are perennial questions that just never seem to stop coming up, … Continue reading

Parents- Control Your Kids’ Behavior In School Or You May Have To Pay A Fine

If my child misbehaves in school, should I be penalized for his unruly behavior? Or is it the responsibility of the teacher to control my child when he’s in school? Some districts are beginning to fine parents for their kids misbehaving in school and personally, I think it’s a good thing. When I was in school, we didn’t misbehave. Okay maybe just a little. But somehow the threat of having our parents notified and the possibility of a spanking was enough to keep us in line. Some school districts blame the parents’ attitudes for the state of today’s schools, as … Continue reading

Accountability Partners

Most Christians I’ve talked with seem to have a pretty good understanding of what an accountability partner is. It’s a fellow believer that you can go to for prayer requests, fellowship, study, and well of course, accountability. When choosing an accountability partner, it’s probably better you find someone other than your spouse and someone of the same gender as yourself. No one is going to understand women’s issues better than a woman, and no one will understand a man’s issues quite like a man. Typically, though not always, men and women tend to have different types of struggles. Women tend … Continue reading

Censoring — Good or Bad?

To go along with our discussion about the little black marker . . . Several years ago when Eminem came out with his first rap album, there arose a big controversy over whether or not censorship labels should be put on music. His lyrics were more obscene than any we had yet seen on the market, and parents were very upset that there was nothing on the packaging to indicate what might lie beneath. I remember that there was even an episode of Donahue dedicated to the topic. Free rights activists argued that there should be no such labeling, and … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action! – Accountability

Accountability is an issue that helps and hinders all of us. In the Spring Forward to Action Challenge, defining your accountability from the outset will help you to stay on track. There are several different types of accountability methods. The methods I will discuss include: A Journal A Trainer A Trust The first is a method that makes you directly accountable to yourself. Now, this has its pros and cons. An obvious pro is that you can track your workouts, how you feel both before and after. You can also measure your progress and weigh whether you need to increase … Continue reading
