The Tears of a Clown: Robin Williams Enters Rehab for Alcoholism

There are two stars that I almost feel like I have grown up with – John Travolta and Robin Williams. Both were young stars when I was a teen and have grown into very established stars. I have followed the career of both and have seen them go from underappreciated to well respected actors. As far as comedy goes, there is – at least in my mind – no comic greater at improve than Robin Williams. In fact, he may be the best – ever. It was announced this week that Robin Williams decided to enter rehab for alcoholism. His … Continue reading

Friday Scrapbook Funnies: Warning Signs That You May Be Addicted to Scrapbooking

Summer is definitely getting hotter, and the days are definitely much longer. I used to be so excited to see the weekend arrive, but now my days and weeks with the kids just sort of blend all together. Thankfully there is plenty of fun and great laughs to get us through the longer days and summer evenings. I thought I’d leave you with a cute weekend laugh. I have had this posted on a bulletin board in my scrap area for a couple of years and just thought I should share it. If you are a scrapbooker, you surely should … Continue reading

Are you an Enabler?

Do you have a friend who is hopeless at budgeting and you’re constantly lending her ten dollars here and twenty dollars there? Do you have a spouse with an alcohol problem and you phone his or her boss to call in sick instead of making them do it themselves? Do you constantly take on extra duties each time your older teen has an assignment due instead of allowing them to feel out of control themselves? The Wasted Baseball Career of Steve Howe

Very few of us have the talent required to play major league baseball. Steve Howe did and threw it all away. I was saddened to read that he had died recently when his truck rolled over in Coachella, CA. You may not remember the name Steve Howe, but I do. You heard his name a lot in the 80s – sometimes for good reasons, but mostly for bad. He was a promising young pitcher drafter in the first round by the prestigious Los Angeles Dodgers. And, he performed well for them his first year, earning 17 saves and being named … Continue reading

The Difference Between Drug Abuse and Addiction

Although the use of illegal drugs among teens is dropping in the United States, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse 50% of high-school graduates have tried illegal drugs, 23% will have used them within the thirty days before the survey, and anywhere from 0.5 to 7% are using drugs on an almost daily basis. Most teens that use drugs are not addicted, although those 0.5 to 7% who use on a daily basis most likely are. But many teens are involved in drug abuse. In fact a 2004 survey conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services … Continue reading

Teens and Gaming: Is It BAD for Them?

Last night on the TV show “Boston Legal,” one of the storylines involved a single mother who sued a video game manufacturer because her teenage son died while playing one of their games. Apparently the boy played it to the exclusion of things like eating, drinking and sleeping and died of a heart attack. The mother’s attorney claimed that the game was purposely designed by the manufacturer to be addictive. Unfortunately for her, her attorney wasn’t one of the partners at the “Boston Legal” firm of Crane, Poole and Schmidt. That attorney convinced the jury that it was wrong to … Continue reading

Addicted to Love?

We humans are capable of becoming addicted to just about anything, be it drugs, food, chocolate, or shopping. The list is endless. If it exists, it can become an addiction! So it’s not surprising to learn that we can also become addicted to love. And like any addiction, the end result is pain. But surely love isn’t a vice? Well, it is when we become addicted to the actual feelings we experience when first we fall in love, and not the actual person themselves. When we fall in love, we are literally bathed in a sea of hormones; enveloped in … Continue reading
