In one of my favorite movies, Father of the Bride Part II, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams play a mother and daughter who conceive around the same time and give birth on the same day. Keaton’s character, Nina, suspects menopause, so it’s assumed that she must be in her fifties. In the US, giving birth beyond age 50 is fairly rare, but it happens more than it used to due to fertility treatments, which allow women of “advanced maternal age” to use the eggs of younger women. 56-Year-Old Australian Gives Birth; Fertility Clinic Under Investigation

Another older mom has given birth and caused a bit of controversy. The 56-year-old Australian, who conceived with the aid of IVF, is believed to be the oldest mother in Australia. The woman has three children aged mid-teens to mid-30s. Her husband is reported to be in his mid-30s also. What was strange about this report is that the family was forced to move from their home to another suburb because of “negativity towards her pregnancy.” I am hoping that this negativity didn’t go beyond verbal taunts. World’s Oldest Mom Gives Birth To Twins

A new world record has been set. A 67-year-old woman has just given birth to twins, making her the world’s oldest mother. The mother, whose name has not been released at the time of this writing, gave birth in Barcelona, Spain, after undergoing in vitro fertilization in the U.S. The previous record holder was a 66-year-old Romanian who gave birth in 2005. The mother and babies were reported to be doing fine, although the babies were in an incubator.
